Question for anyone out there that plays BJ as a source of income or to supplement their current incomes in order to pay bills.
The reason why I ask this is because playing recreationally and playing in order to pay one's bills I believe affects one differently in regards to one's concious stress levels as well as one's subconcious stress levels.
My brother pointed out to me tonight that he thought that it "can't be healthy" to experience the extreme highs and lows of playing thousands of dollars. Now I can assign his own feelings to this as his projection of his own stress that he experiences while watching me play...but his comments have given me pause to think.
In my training with Critical Incident Stress and as a former RN I know full well that "stress" doesn't always have to be a negative experience...thus even though I may be up tens of thousands of dollars...I wonder if there is an actual toll on my heart/blood pressure etc...
Hence my reason to post is twofold...My quest to find out if anyone out there experiences this themselves or knows of anyone. Secondly, to use this post as a stress release of which I know is necessary in order to release the "pressure valve" so to speak.

Interesting post and obviously, I am not in the category your requested input from...for that I apologize. Nor am I involved in the medical profession in any way. However, I have taken "stress tests" that involve extreme exertion in order to get blood presure and heart rate up to levels bordering on stroke! What is "stress". Is it not related to blood pressure and heart rate? With that in mind, those of us like myself gain more in terms of cardiovascular exercise by playing high stress BJ than from walking 5 miles on a treadmill <LOL>

Stress while being $10,000 ahead? That sounds like A LOT of endorphins to me. That type of "stress" I am sure I could deal with. ......
It's the $10,000 in the hole that would kill me!
My first sessions were good but I was foolish and gave most of it back. After that it has been nothing but bad cards and a lot more money lost than I care to admit.

Actually it is all relative in regards the amounts won and lost. Each one of us has different tolerances in regards to what we win and lose.
One thing I've been thinking about in regards to the mental aspect of the game and the resulting "stress" that occurs is the deadening effect of the value of money.
I used to work at a job that netted me 4-5k/week. One would think that could possible cause someone to look at money differently. Instead I'm finding that it is only now that I've left that job and am working for much less that money seems almost surreal when I win and lose thousands.
What I'm worried about is that conciously I can say "no big deal" when I lose...but is this "numb feeling" towards the money actually a mental defense mechanism towards the reality that I may have just blown a years worth of earnings?

Not new to the game. Perhaps too it is the endorphin OD'ing that is occuring lol. But you're right to say that being down 10k is bad...No matter if I feel that I can make that back, it is still draining to know that the time spent in the casino is time you won't get back.
