Default Black... Jack... DRAMAAAAAAAAA!!!!

Okay I went to play (Yes, Again) to casino today and here's what happened.

The count was VERY, VERY UNUSUALLY HIGH. It was well over TC +5 (which is higher than anything you'll get around here), something like +17 with not even 4 decks left...

I bet big (30$ is HUGE for me) and people had quite a lot of cash on that too. Plus, people can bet on another person, so there was quite a lot of cash there. The dealer was dealt a 6; many people have 17, 19, 20 and such good games. One had 11 and doubled it and got a 9, one other doubled.

I was deal 10 10 vs dealer 6. I was the last player at the table, the last one to move before the dealer. Deciding dealer MUST bust, I...

I...

I split, of course. I split 10s

INSTANTLY, people all around the table were angry. EVERY player was raising their hands in the air, claiming I was "the biggest blackjack newbie ever who didn't know **** about anything... YOU DON'T SPLIT 10" and how " I was gonna learn a lesson..." Anyway. You get the picture. One lady even tried to make me ''unsplit''. Crazy!

I was dealt a 8 and 9. Or 7 and 9 I don't remember. I was quite proud of me and stood. Dealer had hidden 10, up to 16.

NICE, huh?

Well, guess the next card? Can you guess it?

A five of course! 6-10-5, 21. That was THA END. Their own words. People were really, really, REALLY ****ING PISSED. They called me all names. If I had stood on 20, dealer would had gotten 8, 6-10-8, Bust. Oh man that was some heavy drama. Dealer collected everyone's cash and suddenly one decided "I should repay his loss, SINCE I MADE HIM LOSE". Brillant thinking!

One lady pused her chips at my spot, claiming "she didn't want me here anymore" and "that I was probably working for the casino anyway". YES, SHE LITTERALLY KICKED ME OUT -- AND THE DEALER DID NOTHING. I tried to argue, but everyone around were... the word "pissed" is not enough. They were furious. With right, maybe? I don't know. They didn't hit me, but they made it clear that... Well, that I should leave.

I didn't feel any guilt (should I?). I took my chip and left. That was some heavy, crazy ****. People wanted to kill me ... for splitting 10! Damn, I did not know this was a crime. And the dealer? Not a word. Not when they called me "****ing asshole" or "stupid bitch" and such terms. Nothing. At all. I hate this place.

Anyway, your thoughts on that? Maybe I'm really a "moron that should avoid blackjack like plague"? My bad to split? I really thought that was the good move. But... well. So, your thoughts?

I just hope you didn't let them kick you out before the end of that good shoe. Sounds like they did though. You made the correct move and if ploppies don't like it then THEY need to leave.

You should have told the lady or anyone who questioned your strategy that you would unsplit for a $1. With a $30 bet out not splitting the tens for $1 is a much better play than splitting them. That and if they get burned your recourse is 'you could have insured a dealer bust for a dollar, I just wanted to make sure you weren't hazing the new guy'. Splitting 10's draws attention and the value of it in a TC5 count with a $30 bet would be measured in portions of a penny. It would have been worth much more to play another hand in a positive count.

Default Go for the gold!

Now you know why a lot of people don't split tens, even if the count calls for it.

Next time, announce in advance that you intend to split your tens. If the people are as loony as you make them sound, you ought to be able to get more than a dollar to not split. Extort as much as you can from them.

Splitting 10's is one of the more valuable index plays and not one I'm willing to play without. But please do make sure you are using the risk-averse version of the index number! Risk-averse means that the count is sufficiently high that the added profit from doing it overcomes the added risk from doing it, in terms of Kelly proportional betting.

I'm curious to know what casino this is that allows players to verbally abuse others. You can tell me in a private message if you want.

that really really sux, i hate when that happens.. if 6 people say you are wrong, you are wrong, there is nothing you can do, nothing you can say, because money will always win, and if the dealer had busted with your split, there was probably a greater than 50% chance that most would cheer for you.. but overall, in that situation, you should say "the count was high" and then go around to every person and say "can you count cards? can you? what about you? and you? CAN YOU COUNT YES OR NO?" and then say "so how the hell do you know what your talking about? you dont split tens most of the time, but that wasnt most of the time" and you would have gotten punched in the face for saying this one, but you should have said "and most importantly of all, my play cannot effect your CHANCE of winning!" they would have said "**** it dont, i lost $50!".. also, you should have said "you know damn well the real reason you are so mad is because you are in here all the damn time losing all over the place because you dont know **** about what you are doing, you havent read one book, and thats why you are down thousands of dollars.. maybe instead of looking for others to blame for your losses, you should go pick up a few books and learn what the long run is all about, and/or go get help for your gambling problem, because that is truely why you are mad, because you lose 9/10 trips"

****in ploppys piss me off (unless they keep their superstitions to themselves).. ****in retards.. and yes this hit a nerve, because i had to deal with broke ass superstitious idiot ploppys from gary indiana back when i played at the $3 table, and a pit boss even told me money wasnt the only reason they stopped the $3 tables, it was to get all the rif raff out because there were too many fights

the only mistake you made was leaving the table

you should have stayed put and told everyone at the table that "you plan to split 10s all damn night long and if i take the dealer's bust card - so be it"

People are a bit silly to get upset. No one knows what the next card will be. In the few games that I have played my hand has more often than not been saved by someone making a "silly" move. Of course I am playing at the smallest value table that my casino offers, but still, people should have the right to make any move they like. Even if you were counting cards someone else's move shouldn't effect your hand. I mean it does, but it just means the dealer will get a different card!

If they wanted so desperately to have the power over the dealer getting the next card then they should have fought over the last base position.

They are right, you shouldn't have moved... THEY should have moved.

This is the main reason i sit at first base. Most ploppys cant figure out what the difference would of been after one card has been drawn. Let alone two or three.

Agreed. On another table, someone hit 12 vs dealer 6. I was quite pissed but thought ''oh well''. He got a 3 and everyone after him stood ( at 15 and such bad hands). The dealer had a hidden 10, meaning that would have given him 6-10-3, 19, we all lose. He instead got a 10 and busted

It's Montréal Casino. This place has really lost its edge. It sucks, simple as that. Every dealer has different blackjack rules. I asked one if surrender was allowed, and he didn't know. Crazy.
