Default Most Corrupt Members Of Congress Report

CREW RELEASES THIRD ANNUAL
MOST CORRUPT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS REPORT

September 18, 2007

Washington, DC – Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) released its third annual report on the most corrupt members of Congress entitled Beyond DeLay: The 22 Most Corrupt Members of Congress (and two to watch). This encyclopedic report on corruption in the 110th Congress documents the egregious, unethical and possibly illegal activities of the most tainted members of Congress. CREW has compiled the members’ transgressions and analyzed them in light of federal laws and congressional rules.

Sixteen members have been replaced from last year’s list of 25.
CREW also has re-launched the report’s tandem website, www.beyonddelay.org. The site offers short summaries of each member’s transgressions as well as the full-length profiles and all accompanying exhibits.

Members of the Senate:

Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-NM)
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK)

Members of House:

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA)
Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-CA)
Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL)
Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA)
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA)
Rep. William J. Jefferson (D-LA)
Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA)
Rep. Gary G. Miller (R-CA)
Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV)
Rep. Timothy F. Murphy (R-PA)
Rep. John P. Murtha (D-PA)
Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM)
Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ)
Rep. Harold Rogers (R-KY)
Rep. David Scott (D-GA)
Rep. Don Young (R-AK)
Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL)
Rep. Heather A. Wilson (R-NM)

Dishonorable Mention:

Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID)
Sen. David Vitter (R-LA)

“Every year CREW creates this compendium of corruption to expose and hold accountable those members of Congress who believe they are above the law,” Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW said today. “With the third edition of Beyond DeLay it has become abundantly clear that many public officials believe that the rules don’t apply to them.”

Sloan continued, “Nevertheless, Congress persists in abdicating its constitutional responsibility to police itself, opting to ignore the ethical and legal transgressions of its members. Luckily for the public, at least the Department of Justice still believes that political corruption is worth pursuing.”

Several members in the study are already under federal investigation including: Reps. Calvert, Doolittle, Feeney, Jefferson, Lewis, Miller, Mollohan, Murphy, Renzi and Young, as well as Senator Stevens.

In a way I do not think that William Jefferson belongs on the list. Sure we know that he took a hundred thousand dollar bribe. That is wrong and he may even go to jail for it.

However if you take a close look at the seven Congressional districts in Louisiana you will find that William Jefferson has the highest environmental rating of the bunch (www.lcv.org).

OK his score isn't particularly very good for a Democrat. Gets a 50% rating. Failing in other words. The Dems generally collectively average about 70% year to year. However Jefferson's score is a full 20 points higher than the only other LA Democratic Party House Of Representatives member and more than quadruple the score of the remaining FIVE republican representatives (two of these stinking GOP brats scored a perfect zero). Collectively these GOP (grand old pedophiles) scored 12%...

In the Deep South there is a whole ton of big oil and corporate campaign dollars looking to corrupt the local state and regional players. The result is dumb schitz like Tom Delay, Haley Barbour and Dubya himself of course. Stinking crooks who would sell their own mothers grave for a few greasy bucks over or under the table. What would they care?

Tom Delay called Saipan (U.S. territory in the Philippines) a "bastion of freedom". Yeah right. Soon after he and Abramoff looted the sweat shop workers by accepting kickbacks from local industry.

In Saipan women are forced to have abortions in order to keep their jobs. Children are required to work 16 hour days and often become sex slaves as are the women.

Why were GOP members of Congress bribed by Saipan corporate scum?

In order to keep the "Made In The USA" label on their products.

Seen in that perspective the measly 100K William Jefferson took in bribes is really pretty small fry. He's still a crook, but a far better person than any GOP leader in all of the Federal or State legislature throughout the whole country...

Default Corrupt Democrats? Yawn

Corrupt Democrats? Yawn

The indictment of several Democratic legislative aides in a Pennsylvania corruption scandal elicits this hopeful thought from Ed Morrisey:

This comes at a very bad time for Democrats. They need to hold Pennsylvania in November if they want to win the Presidency, but a massive corruption scandal makes that a lot less likely. . . . [T]his could tip the Keystone State into the red column for 2008 — and possibly several more cycles beyond that.

Sorry, Ed, you're wrong. Having co-authored an entire book on the Democratic Party's history of corruption, I can tell you that people who vote Democrat don't care how crooked the Democrats are. You don't vote for the party of Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton if you care about honesty in government.

The Democratic Party's something-for-nothing ethic -- the thievish and corrupting notion that people are entitled to government benefits paid for by other people's taxes -- renders the party scandal-proof. Oh, sure, Democrats pretend to be upset when Republicans are caught in scandalous behavior. But their phony outrage merely hides their glee at the prospect of ousting a Republican, so they can elect more Democrats, so they can vote themselves more "free" government benefits.

If the people of Pennsylvania cared about corruption, they would never have elected as their governor Ed Rendell, boss of the notorious Philadelphia machine. Republicans therefore cannot benefit politically from a Democratic scandal in Pennsylvania, because it is the voters themselves who are the source of the corruption.

It is foolish to expect public officials to uphold standards of morality that their constituents routinely disregard. How is the politician who lines his pockets from embezzled funds any worse than the man who joins a corrupt labor union? (Of course, all labor unions are corrupt.) How is a crooked government employee worse than someone who votes for Democrats in hopes of getting more taxpayer-funded benefits? It's theft either way, and calling it "progressive social policy" doesn't make it moral.

Nor can you vote for the repug party of DeLay and Gingrich and Cheney and Bush, et al.
If you really care you must vote alternative and/or run for office yourself. zg
