Fury as Israeli textbook admits expulsions

ISRAELI right-wingers are furious at the acknowledgement in a new schoolbook that Palestinians were forcibly expelled when Israel was established in 1948.

They claim it undermines Israel's legitimacy as a Jewish nation state.

Zevulun Orlev, the leader of the National Religious Party, called on the education minister, Yuli Tamir, to step down after she gave the go-ahead for the new textbook, which is much more honest about the 1948 war than many Israelis are.

"Some of the Arab residents were forced to leave their houses and some were expelled and became refugees in the neighbouring Arab countries," the book says.

The book says that what for Jews was a fight for Israeli independence was for Arabs "a catastrophe, a war of disaster and loss".

not surprised in the least. Infact they mainly gloss over the fact they their country didn't exist until 1948. They like to make them think they have been fighting of 'holy land' for millenia etc.

Their country was around a little earlier than 1948. Like the 14-1300's BC.

No, actually. In accordance with their Torah, God took their "country" and did away with it, and told them that they do not get it back until AFTER their Messiah arrives. zg

If ever a peaceful resolution (I am doubtful) can be found, then a high degree of frankness and honesty about past crimes can not be buried or they will always resurect themselves and end temporary peace.

If Arab Israeli children are to learn this in school, first off; it should be realized by everyone that if it is not taught in school they learn it anyway at home and in the Arab press.
Secondly: They should also learn that their people, Palestinians and other Arabs have also committed crimes and are far from being without guilt that should be also talked about with frankness and honesty.

Full disclosure of what happened to Jews, who have lived forever in Arab lands, should also be taught to the same children so they can see that the continuation of what has been going on forever will only bring more grief and both sides must either come together or resolve themselves to a deadly end.
