Default Mirrors To Save Us From Asteroids?

This is actually a weapon concept. zg

Mirror mirror in the sky, save us from asteroids flashing by

FIONA MACLEOD

A NETWORK of mirrors harnessing the destructive power of the sun might save the world from disaster, space experts believe.

If an asteroid should be discovered on a catastrophic collision course with our planet, researchers at Glasgow University say mirrors are the best way to save us from annihilation.

Up to 5,000 could be used to focus sunlight on to the asteroid, melting the rock and altering its orbital path away from the Earth.

Mylar could be made reflective enough. And it's so sheer that it wouldn't be likely to move much when hit by the inevitable space debris and particles.

Wonder how big it would have to be in order to really fry something. Couple of miles wide ought toast anything. If it could be brought into focus quickly enough that is.

A collapsing reflective package able to focus a straight beam at least a million miles away. Maybe ten million.

Exactly. And despite the cost of putting the thing in space the ingredients would be relatively low tech.

A couple radio shack phones and commercial sized rolls of mylar. Maybe some furnace tape and two by fours to go with it. Then presto! Burn a whole village from a thousand miles up.

Almost surprised that they didn't develop this during the Johnson/Nixon years instead on the moon shot. Simple as pie and how are you going to stop it?

The first broiler in space shoots all the competition down before they can lift off the launch pad...

I wasn't recommending that they do this. Only surprised that they haven't done it already.
