Default New Frontier casino-hotel imploded

Demolition destroys one of the earliest spots on the Vegas Strip

updated 10:23 a.m. ET Nov. 13, 2007

LAS VEGAS - The New Frontier casino-hotel was imploded early Tuesday, giving a violent end to the second property to open on the Las Vegas Strip.

The 16-story hotel tower was felled with over 1,000 pounds of explosives before a group of reporters and bystanders to make way for a multibillion-dollar resort bearing The Plaza brand, which is set to open in 2011.

Elad Group owner and Israeli billionaire Yitzhak Tshuva, who is partnering to build an $8 billion megaresort where the New Frontier stood, shook hands and gave hugs after the tower went down.

An easterly breeze helped to quickly dissipate the dust.

The New Frontier earned historical notations by becoming the Strip's first theme casino and hosting Elvis Presley's debut in the city.

Thanks for the link.

I'm not sure how they will be able to use The Plaza in a town that already has a Plaza.

Yeah, the Stardust was demolished last March.

"Though there have been a number of significant implosions over the last decade, the Stardust's erasure was the largest since the Sands disappeared into a cloud of dust in 1996."

They never had bikini bull riding though.

But they had the rat pack.

My wife's uncle owned a beauty salon there for years. He came to Vegas in 1946 and knew everyone in town. Among his accomplishments: Judy Garland's personal make-up man and Official photographer for the Oakland Raiders. He passed last year, but you should have heard the stories he had about the early Vegas days. My wife visited him in the seventies. Little did she know that he had bodyguards following her wherever she went, until a little incident and they stepped in. Only in Vegas!

It appears the NF was pretty intact when they imploded it. The Stardust and the Boardwalk were gutted extensively prior to implosion. I wonder why such a difference?
