First close call with a back off.
happened a little over a week ago.
Dealer accuses me of counting. I reply that I can't even add up my own cards. Which is true but mostly because while counting cards my mind can't always quickly comprehend four and five card hands. i once hit a twenty by mistake!
Anyway the smile leaves the dealer's face and he starts dealing the next shoe at three times his regular rate.
I leave. Can see why this game takes a steel veneer of personality. hard to continue with the "wolf breathing down my neck".
By the way, I wasn't particularly up in units. Probably off a few over all. It was just after a particularly big run of high wagers at high count that caused the dealer to make the accusations. Was betting a 1 to 8 spread or so on two spots six deck heads up.
So basically the casino was still making money or at least breaking even when the accusation was made. Strange.

smart @ss dealers
I have run into this crap from dealers before for reasons not known. I act confused and rebutt their claims with tact. My best one rebuttal is " if I was counting shouldn't I be winning". Some dealers need atittude adjustments but I find them to be presistent I eventually leave but not right away. There are some dealers I won't even sit at their tables because of the atittude that comes with them. There are some dealers who like tips and heads up play is fun for them too. If someone can rattle your cage that's a weakness and we have to subdue our emotions or the casino wins. blackchipjim

my favorite was when a drunk kid told the dealer he was counting...and then the pit boss too. They didnt seem to care. he went on a large roller coaster of probably $1k up to $500 down to up $1400-1500 maybe. And yes, he was counting, because i was counting right with him but wasnt betting near as much ..........i would imagine a dealers job sux, maybe your dealer gets off by making players sweat.

Best response is just to leave without much comment, which is what you did.

A dealer can't back you off. It's not a dealer's job to look for APs.
The worst he could have done was narc on your to a supervisor. (which, if it resulted in a backoff, would be bad).
The second worst thing would have been to radically cut penetration.
The third worst thing would have been to act douchey. Depending on where you were playing, this might be the normal state of affairs.
Also, how serious was the dealer? I've been joke accused of cheating before. And the whole table would just laugh and laugh and laugh.

Sounds like the dealer was pretty serious. Why risk getting ratted out, if you can just take off and come back another time?

Sounds like a good deal to me. Please, tell me where the dealers start dealing three times as fast when they think you're a counter. I'll start moving my lips.

This is why I always ask for a lime with my Corona. While holding the cards with one hand, its real easy to accidently spill the drink while pushing the lime into the bottle. Now you have a real reason to leave the table. You can't play a soaked spot.
Look at the dealer and let your eyes tell him "Message recieved. Message Sent".
