Beatles' Renowned Guru Dies

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a guru to the Beatles who introduced the West to transcendental meditation, died Tuesday at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop, a spokesman said. He was thought to be 91 years old.

The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi died Tuesday at his home in the Netherlands Tuesday. He was thought to be 91. The Maharishi founded a technique known as transcendental meditation or TM, a routine in which the meditator focuses on a mantra to induce relaxation. He was propelled to fame when the Beatles sought his spiritual guidance.

"He died peacefully at about 7 p.m.," said Bob Roth, a spokesman for the Transcendental Meditation movement that the Maharishi founded. He said his death appeared to be due to "natural causes, his age."

Once dismissed as hippie mysticism, the Hindu practice of mind control that Maharishi taught, called transcendental meditation, gradually gained medical respectability.

He began teaching TM in 1955 and brought the technique to the United States in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968, although he had a famous falling out with the rock stars when he discovered them using drugs at his Himalayan retreat.

Taking a Yogic Flier on 'Peace Bonds'

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who came to fame in the 1960s as the Beatles' guru, has a new plan: He's going to produce world peace -- and make a profit doing it. And you -- yes, you! -- can get a cut of the action by purchasing the bonds issued by the maharishi's country, which is called the Global Country of World Peace.

The bonds will pay 6 to 7 percent interest -- plus world peace, which is a pretty good dividend in itself.

"Create world peace -- and earn money!" the maharishi urged yesterday at a news conference carried on closed-circuit TV from his home in Holland to various places around the world, including the Maharishi Vedic Center in Bethesda. But he didn't just tout his new "World Peace Raam Bonds." He also denounced democracy, lambasted Washington and mocked President Bush.

"He's rash," the maharishi said when asked about Bush. "He's a destroyer of the world. When we create higher consciousness, he'll be out."

The maharishi is no fan of our nation's capital. In 1991 he moved his
American headquarters out of the city and urged his followers to
leave, calling Washington a "pool of mud."
