Passport to play?

A few casinos near me (UK) have begun asking for your passport before you are allowed to play. Any thoughts on this, anyone else experiencing this?

UK casinos require membership and used to require a waiting period. I believe the point was to avoid becoming a casino destination, like Vegas. The regs have been relaxed. But I believe all EU casinos require id the first visit under EU regs.
