I would think that in some locales, a friendly and sociable AP might lessen heat and actually be an asset to the casino in some cases. So many people just can't quite get over the hump to make a profit at the game but they come close and the AP will give them hope. They guy on a date will want to be a big shot and lay down more money to show he can be a winner also. I think in many ways an AP can help promote the gaming industry.

I agree with that. Quite often, dealers are standing idle at an empty table.
Some ploppies are intimidated playing one on one against the dealer, so the table is getting no action.
AP's often prefer heads up, and sit down. Once the plops see someone playing they sit down and throw their bets out giving action on that before empty table.

Really good points! If there is a dealer just standing at an empty table the house is losing whatever they pay that dealer per hour (obviously peanuts) but nevertheless, negative EV and AV. Now if a card counter sits down and attains a 1% edge but also lures in two plops/ half-ass basic strategy players that accumulate a combined negative 2% EV; the house effectively has a 1% positive EV on that one table that was previously a useless table (assuming all three players bets are in the same range). If on the other hand our card counter is generating $200/hr EV and the plops are only losing half of that the casino would be wise to back off said counter. Like always, will be highly dependent on the casino. Not all casinos are in the "wise" category.

At other games, like baccarat, that's what shills are for. But, for whatever reason, shills seem never to be used for blackjack.

The AP may be generating $200 per hour but also be suffering a period of bad variance and losing $200 per hour. Although all hands are the same there are days when it all seems to be going bad. On those days I would say to keep losing at a place that knows you as a winner to let them have a little relief and get some heat off you maybe. Make sense?

You would think that it does help but in reality, it does not make a difference. All that matters to the casino is when you made those bigger bets. Because you may have had a bad day by losing most of your big bets that day will not win you any favors.

If a place already "knows you as a winner" they should not be allowing you to play in the first place. So that doesn't really make any sense.

Yes dealers and pit notice when you sit down and get some other players to join you in a dead game. But that just kills your advantage, and it may buy you a little longevity but trust me like bosox said the casino is still watching for your big bets.

The last time I saw shills employed in a casino blackjack, they were dealers who would rotate between dealing and shilling, at some of the downtown casinos in the late 70s
