Can someone be successful with basic skills?

So far I have taught myself card counting, basic strategy, and the 18 index. I'm heading up to a Casino this weekend and I'm going to try out my new found skills for the first time. Betting with small units just to try it out in an actual casino instead of my living room. Are there any other things I should brush up on first?

be careful that the basic strategy you are using is the correct one for the game you are going to be playing.
you didn't mention how you are planning to structure your bets only that you intend to bet small units. you should have a optimal betting game plan.

The casino is a whole different deal

Apparently, some people have little trouble making the transition from counting at home to counting at the casino. I wasn't one of them. Maybe you will be. Don't get discouraged if you're not.

It might be useful to count down a shoe or two while just watching.

Have you practiced keeping the count while playing your hand?

i had a rough time counting my first trying it in a casino. hell it was my first time playing blackjack in a casino come to think of it  .
uhhmm i sat down started counting. then i realized hey this tables dealing out of a csm  and hey i can't even begin to keep up with the dealer. so the next table i managed to sit a (it was actually eight decks and i thought it was six) i couldn't keep up with the dealer either.

I had some difficulty counting but I figured it was because I was dealing myself three hands and playing the role of dealer while trying to do it as fast as possible.

yeah i don't think you want to be dealing to your self like that BB. just practice counting cards as you flip them over one at a time, two at a time and fanning them out on the table.
then for practice counting and playing fire up your computer and home blackjack program and count as you play then. hopefully you have some kind of blackjack program.

Practicing

If you go into a casino and get totally lost after the first five cards are dealt don't get discouraged. That happened to me the first time I went counting.

Counting at home and counting in a casino are two very different things. No matter what you do you just can't duplicate the actual casino environment, i.e. noise, annoying players, waitresses, speed of dealer.

Absolutely, positively, under any circumstances whatsoever do you need to do the ol' "if I would of stood instead of hitting then I wouldn't of busted and then the dealer would of gotten that ten to go with his 14 and busted instead of me" type of second-guessing. Never do the ol' "if-I-would-of-done-this-instead-of-that-then-I would-of-won". Accept the results then move on to the next hand. It's useless and a waste of valuable time you could spend figuring out the # of decks left and converting to TC, etc..

Some places, if a player busts, pick up the cards immediately so be sure to watch and see if they do this.

If you can go to a casino and stand behind the players and practice counting then I highly encourage you to do so. And don't mouth the numbers to yourself!!!!

Those are some of the things I have learned so far that might help you.
