Haven't been there myself Preston, but from what I've heard, Blackjack has not remained extremely favorable to low limit players. I would say you'll do as well playing locals joints and downtown for low limit in Vegas. But, it wouldn't be a bad rubber necking trip if you've never been there.
Personally, I'm wanting to go to Reno but that more than a "day trip" from Vegas.

I enjoy Laughlin. Stay there at least once a year.
From a BJ stance,the game has gotten worse over the last few years,but its at least as good as on the strip.Pioneer and the Ramada,plus Don Laughlins Riverside offer a pretty good game and easy comps.
If you have a car,its a nice ride. There are several different routes to get there,each offers a different view of things.
Rooms and Food are cheap and very nice.

I loved my trip to Laughlin. Very relaxed and friendly place - the river walk is beautiful. Every casino has different rules - check around. As I remember the colorado belle had the worst rules - I didn't stay there 5 minutes. The Pioneer had some good games. There is some decent 2 deck at a couple of places. Tables were not crowded and dealers were friendly. Take a cruise on the river if your family is with you. The Pioneer has a good breakifast.

If you just want to go for the day,there are several bus lines that do casino runs down there from Vegas.You get a free lunch,a nice funbook, and the bus is FREE.Only drawback can be you might end up shuttling around Vegas for what seems like hours picking people up.
One time,I was picked up at 7:45 at Harrahs.Several stops later,at 8:20 we were at the Imperial Palace,twenty yards away.Then you go to a central depot and they put you on a different bus.
The ride,itself,is not bad. Pretty scenic and they show movies,as well.
