Foxwoods or Mohegan?
New England sucker here any opinions on either place? I got wiped out of a $1000 last week at Foxwoods. Dealer pulled somewhere in the area of about 12 blackjacks in one shoe!!! Of course I was in the high roller section because that is the only 6 deck action in there. Min $50. I am about 2 hours away from both of them. I haven't hit Atlantic City yet, but soon.

Yes I play at Foxwoods every week, and I'd recommend avoiding the Newport room. There's no advantage to it, and everyone I know who has gotten in trouble at Foxwoods it has been either in or after playing in the Newport room. Mohegan has some playable games too but you have to look a lot harder to get good pen. What kind of stakes/spread are you using?

I play regularly at both. I prefer the atmosphere, restaurants and general layout of Mohegan over Foxwoods, but I think that AM is right in that you are likely to find better penetration at Foxwoods (although they do have some ridiculous rules like allowing players to split 10s, something you would never want to do).

I love splitting tens!
Dumb question, but which is bigger? I've never been to either, but they both sound like barns.

They are both gigantic. Mohegan has about 6,000 slot machines and 300 table games (two casinos) and has just announced a major expansion called Project Horizon. Here's a link to their website: http://www.mohegansun.com/index.jsp If I recall correctly, Foxwoods is the larger of the two and is also in the process of expanding. Both are really beautiful properties. Nothing in AC, except for perhaps the Borgata, even comes close.

I agree, Mohegan is a much nicer place rivaling a Strip property in atmosphere and quality. I burned out their game pretty seriously back when they did offer decent pen so now I am persona non grata at those tables, but I can still get in to play briefly. My girlfriend and I love the free shows in the Wolf Den. Foxwoods I find offensive, especially the food, but I have a pretty solid system for beating them and I've been hammering on them for years now. Can't beat those gas card comps!
But I'm not sure why you don't want to split 10's there- that's a pretty profitable index play and it's not like Foxwoods sweats counters. Mohegan is the oddball and one of only a couple of casinos that doesn't allow splitting 10's.

6,000 slots is only 3 times the size of most california indian casinos, but 300 table games? Damn. that's a lot of tables. That's twice what's at Pechanga (south of LA), and that place felt more like a shopping mall than a casino.

foxwoods
well I've always gone to foxwoods. I really only started playing about 2 years ago, and because of my location its the only game in town. Until recently i was just a basic strategy player. I can say I studied it and followed it well. I took a trip down to Vegas this last Nov, and killed em'. All of them! I got there on a thur at like 3pm, and didn't stop playing until 6am Sat. Took a 3 hour nap and hit them again until I left Sunday night. So I got about 80ish hours in in a 4 day trip! It was pretty sweet. I only played basic strategy, and started with just $300. We played maybe 2 or 3 shoes in one place, and moved to the next alllll the way up the stip, and alllll they way back down. And then did it again. I came home with +$4500! After I got back I wondered why I did so well down there, but pretty much suck at Foxwoods. I chalked it up to the fact that Foxwoods really only plays 8 Deck. So I decided that 8 deck was to be avoided. Thats when I called the Fox, and Mo and asked if they offer anything smaller like 6. Sure enough they do, but an $50 min. So I took the trip down to Foxwoods with $1000, (wayyyy under the correct amount for $50 hands) and got killed again. The "dealers" were on fire. I moved around but no matter what table I sat at, the dealers were pullin BJ's left and right. I was never up, not once! Since my return I have been studying card counting. I play a couple hundred hands a night of 6 deck on my own table, and have been doing pretty well. My main concern has been money management. Anyway I really can't afford to be shootin $50 hands out there at the Fox, but the 8 deck doesn't seem to be the answer... should I be It seems like NY is the next closest step for me or Atlantic City, but not sure it will make a big enough difference for the cost of the travel.

What you need to understand is that even playing perfect basic strategy, you will be a net loser over the long term. You were lucky in LV, but variance and standard deviation caught up with you at Foxwoods and, yes, for a $50 minimum bet, you were severely undercapitalized. Remember that even the best card counters only have a 1-2% advantage over the house and that's for the long term. In the short term, even a very good card counter can and will lose.

We hit both Mohegan and Foxwoods every couple of months. They're both actually good places to play. It is true that you have to work harder to find decent penetration in mohegan, but they offer a lot of beatable 6 deck games when you find them. Foxwoods on the other hand is 8 deck games on the floor, but the penetration is fantastic, and they have good rules including surrender. (As does Mohegan also). I have found Mohegan slightly more aware of card counters, so be aware. Foxwoods on the other hand seems to be fairly clueless when it comes to counting, but I would still play smart just the same, no need to help them get a clue. The CT casinos have recently become some of our favorite spots, we can't play them too regularly, but when we do, it always seems to be very favorable. But just like any other casino, if you're not counting or playing some type of advantage play, it doesn't matter, eventually you will lose regardless of playing conditions.
