3 Cards Equal 11...

#1
Let's say you are dealt a 3 and a 5 and the dealer has a 3. Then you are dealt another 3 which now equals 11. Do you hit this or stand? Thanks...

Hit.

Against a dealer 3, you should continue hitting until you have a total of 13 or more. No matter how many cards are in your hand, keep going until you get to 13 or higher.

(Soft hands with an Ace are more complicated.)

This reminds me of the lady who sat down at our table and wouldn't hit any two card combination. Her husband told her she'd "bust" if she did.

On the flip side:.. Not too long ago there was a young lady playing $500.00 bets every hand and whenever the dealer had a bust card and her's wasn't a stiff she would double every time. Dealer would have 6 showing and her 2 cards totaled 5. (2,3) .. Yep.. she doubled. And the funny thing is that she kept on winning. I could tell it concerned the ploppies at the table but they didn't really say anything. I guess it's sort of that respect factor towards high rollers.

Any of us who have played a lot over the years sees this kind of thing happen. Sometimes....maybe most of the time....it's a disaster and you're the witness to the "train wreck". The times they win, and that happens too, you just sit or stand there shaking your head. The certain knowledge is that they're going to lose in the long run but in the short run it's fascinating to watch.

That's the best advice for you, or better yet------------- don't gamble!
You have absolutely NO feel for the game.

You now have a 3 card 11 and the dealer has a 3 showing.
You have no knowledge of either the dealer's hole card or what card is the next one to be dealt.
If this is correct--I can only imagine that your thought of standing has something to do with not taking the dealer's bust card and you are taking for granted that the dealer has a 10 in the hole and will hit another one to bust?
Realize that the dealer could more easily have a 4,5,6,7, or 8 in the hole and hit than same 10 and beat your 11. The dealer could have an ace and it would take two cards to bust or even if the dealer has a 9 or 10 in the hole, he still will not bust but about 30% of the time or so on one card.

Instead you should be hitting and hopeful that indeed the next card is a 10 so you have 21. 11 vs dealer 3 is a nicely positive EV hand if you hit and a highly negative EV hand if you stay.

Very possible she was hole-carding...

Forums are here to aks questions. I'm just starting to learn the game. And this question came up. So, do you have any OTHER advise instead of don't gamble?

There's nothing wrong with asking questions, we were all new once. But you have to realize how absurd your question was.

If the answer to this kind of question is not obvious to you, you almost certainly have no business playing.

So, you sound like you must be the World Blackjack Champion? Well, propbaly not. You wouldn't be here. If these questions bother you, don't be absurd and answer it. Let the conversation flow with the nice ones like KEN who graciously answered.

Of course not, and your obnoxious attitude will get you nowhere. I have no problem with new people asking questions, and I do answer them regularly.

But when someone asks such a ridiculous question like this, it's entirely reasonable to assume that if such a person did endeavor to sit at a table, they would be brutally taught a very expensive lesson.

You should be thanking us for the warning.

johndoe, I think you nailed it.

Beyond that, the question is so ridiculous that most of us would view the post as a troll. We assume some ulterior motive--starting a flame war, pushing or selling a bogus system, distracting from some other thread, etc. And yet, I have seen precisely the type of atrocious play alluded to in the original question. In games in Europe where there is no hole card, I have seen players stand on hard 11 v 6, among other atrocious plays. Seeing how foolish the players are, it is amazing that any casino on the planet could ever have financial problems.

Many non-Us casinos have financial problems because there are too many fingers reaching into their pockets. Many pay the local mob, and the local police, then the local politicians, ect, ect. It's much the same as in the nightclub business. You see them collecting $20 at the door and charging $14 a drink and think it's a license to print money.

Since you aks so nicely, here is some advice. Go to your local library, take out several books on BJ and read them. Then re-read them. Then take some index cards and write down basic strategy. Spend at least a week memorizing it. Then come back and ask whatever questions you still have.
If you don't have a library,go to amazon.
