An interesting variation on comp counting

#1
A couple months, a local casino had a promotion that was something like this: as long as I play for about 3 hours and pump through some minimal amount of action (would have to be considerably more than 25-cent video poker, though) I get a comp worth about $40, and I find the comp useful. Playing $5 BJ for the specified amount of time is enough to get the comp. (I don't find this promo valuable enough to hide the specifics.)

The trouble is, their BJ game sucks. It's pretty typical for the Midwest, I suppose, 6D H17 DAS RSA with crappy pen. I wouldn't even considering it worth wonging, as I have a LS game nearby. From a play-all perspective, it can't be beaten well without at least a 1-16 spread, and I can't afford that. So what do I do? The -EV of simply flat-betting $5 for 3 hours has got to cost less than $40, although I haven't done the calculations.

But I am cheap, you know? And I don't like enduring variance for the benefit of playing a crappy game. So here's what I did. I only bet $5 when the PB was looking, and otherwise removed my bet. I also bet 2x5 or 2x6 when the count was high. I chose a crowded table and made really, really sloooow playing decisions. I probably played about 25% of the hands and the PB left me in the computer the whole time.

Because the PB was pacing from game to game, I went through stretches where I was literally playing every other hand. I looked like a truly insane ploppy! Oh, it made the ploppies frighteningly angry. I don't think I've ever seen such angry ploppies. I almost ruined my own plan, since I was relying on the ploppies to slow down my game and I ended up chasing some away. The dealer hated me too, since I would do things like stare at a hard 12 for 30 seconds when trying to decide if i should it against a 10.

I'm not sure what the -EV of this outing was. It couldn't have been much. But I still managed to lose slightly more than the value of the comp on that particular day. Oh well.

Anyone ever heard of this kind of promo?

Sure, it doesn't sound that unique as a promo, but I'm wondering why you would flat bet and not spread? Can you afford $5-25? If so, you've got a small +EV on top of your comp, and you'll probably get your comp quicker.

As long as you're at the table, your time is being consumed so you might as well get a little more cash out of it, right? And you should be counting no matter what, just for your index and insurance plays to keep the house edge down. No reason to not spread just on principle, just because it is a poor game.

($5 per hand)*(half-percent HE--0.005)*(100 hands per hour)*(3 hours) = -$7.50.

They are paying you $40, thus with flat-betting you are earning $32.50 over these three hours. Sounds good enough for me.

See how fun math can be?

With his speed of play and full tables he'd be lucky to get 60 hands per hour. So he would do even better, more like $35.50.

Indeed, this is the case. My calculation was of the "hatchet" variety than the scalpel sort.

Probably even better, as he said he was playing every other hand quite often. If you are slowing the game down to a crawl as well as skipping hands, hes probably looking at 30-40 hands/hr. Max Rubin has a great book, "Comp City" regarding ways to slow down play and minimizing your losses from play.

Due to the length of my post...

my story wasn't very clear. Of course I counted and used index plays! I spread on a ramp up to 2x6 (starting with 1 box of $5 up to 2 boxes of $30). The point of my story is I tried to play as little as possible since I wasn't willing to do the 2x10 spread that would have probably been necessary to gain much of an advantage.

Wonging (and by that I mean only playing at +2 or higher) is probably hard to do for comps, so "play when the PB is looking" is a sort of compromise for this purpose.

It's for something I would otherwise happily pay $40 for, so at least for me, it works.

I feel kind of silly posting this if this is actually a common type of promo.

If you are counting and spreading then be careful about just sitting out large amounts of hands. This can be a signal for surveillance to check you out.

I just realized this guy's name is "horse_johnson"! I can't figure out if that's a reference to horse penises, or what?

In any case, I'd recommend reading Ezekiel 23:20.
