Betting Ramp for Me

Those that have read my posts know that I have been lucky with good variance as a newb. Now, I am actually well capitalized, and smart enough to know that I am not playing to my potential advantage due to the learning curve.

The pros: basic strategy = stone cold, counting has improved a lot = near perfect, indices (surrender included) known for the top plays (I18 & beyond), good cover

One thing I need to learn, and ask for help with, is a good betting ramp. I've found that I prefer playing 2 units right off the top. I also like spreading to 2 hands at some point during good counts, and also sometimes during nuutral ones as cover. My thought was:

TC < -2 = wong immediately
TC < 0 = 1 unit
TC < 1 = 2 units (spread to 2 hands if ace deficient)
TC < 2 = 4 units
TC < 3 = 6 or 8 units? (I want an agressive ramp, and it's here I would typically spread to 2 hands) Is 8 TOO agressive?
TC > 3 = add 2 units on any net win, max 16 units

Your post lacks crucial info'

  • Is this a shoe game ?
  • The Rule Set is … ?
  • The median penetration level is … ?
  • What count are you using ?

I hope that you understand that a swift route to being
86'd is spreading to 2 hands in good betting situations.

The questions need to be answered.

My statement above is not debatable.

Sorry Flash,

- Yeah, I play 6D
- Let's say PA rules... DAS, LS, 3 splits, can't resplit aces, S17
- Hi-Lo, 75%

I debate your statement about 2 hands.... I have done it all over town for 8 months, with blacks, and very little problem. It caused a problem at ONE place out of at least 30. But I use a lot of cover.

wanted to get more info on betting ramps the experts in this forum use. I have been messing with some sims, and noticed that my current betting pattern is much more aggressive then what standard sims show. I am most curious about how many units (assuming a unit is your min bet) is ideal for TC +2, +3, +4. Standard 6 deck game with surrender, assume both 1 hand and 2 hands. Do pros only bet ~2 units at TC +2? How much would S.D. increase if one were to ramp more aggressively?

Hi Flash,

it's in the post above per your request.... hi-lo

Let me know your thoughts! I have been struck by bad variance for the first time, and I mean BAD

Your bankroll will determine your max bet (what RoR you're comfortable with), the tolerance of the casinos you play at will determine your spread, and your spread will determine your bet ramp. I think the general consensus is that you need to spread 12:1 without excessive wonging at shoe games to make it worth your time, although PA games have excellent rules, so perhaps you could get away with slightly less.

If you are spreading 12:1, you should have your max bet out at TC = 4 at latest. So something like:

Wong out at TC < -1
1 unit at TC =< 0 but > -1
2 units at TC = 1
4 units at TC= 2
8 units at TC= 3
12 units at TC = 4

If you're playing two hands, you should bet 75% of what you would normally bet in that situation on each hand. I generally think spreading to two hands is a good way to lower variance, but it may depend on how sweaty the store you're at is. Also, it depends on how good your cover/act is. If pit critters think you're a gambler, spreading to two hands shouldn't be an issue. If it's your home base store, you may want to stick to one hand in all but the most favorable situations.
