when you travel, do you take a laptop computer with you? if so, any recommendations? im in the market for a new one and open to suggestions for powerful, RELIABLE laptops easy to take around without adding much weight...

also, i wonder if casino hotels that offer internet in the rooms/lobby monitor the sites its patrons visit while browsing - ie would any of you visit this site or bj21.com while browsing the net in your room at a casino hotel?

maybe this thread goes in the "anything else" section? but it is kind of related to blackjack LOL. if so, moderator, feel free to move it please.

thanks,
rukus

If it's a one night trip, I usually don't take a laptop. Longer trips, yes. I have a Dell. Reason I got it is it let me have XP instead of Vista. I believe there are still a few of those left.

I've never been concerned about acessing any sites via their network. Hey, I've even been in Borgata's "living room" reading this site, though I do sit near the wall where no eye in the sky can see what's on my screen.

I have a 17" Gateway and it goes to Vegas on every trip I make. I'm able to upload my win/loss into Excel and I can even practice on Casino Verite. I also run sims on the games in town and that is a valubale tool to have immediate access to. I think it's worth lugging around. I travel light so I carry a small bag with clothes etc and a case for my laptop. :)

If you don't have any special requirements, most laptops would be just fine. I'm a fan of Lenovo.

I highly doubt that casinos are tracking internet activity; doing so would be a major privacy invasion that would impact the non-AP folks far more than the AP's. They won't take a chance with this.

However, if you're paranoid, just use Tor or something similar to hide your traffic. torproject.org

The Mabook Air is just the best for traveling I think. It doesn't weight too much and you run Windows on it too if you don't like OS X ;).

funny, after everything i actually did switch to a mac after being a windows user forever; but i opted for the new macbook pro. while it isnt as light as the air, it is more powerful and still fairly light at about 5.4 lbs. It's battery life of 4.5 hours (what ive gotten in practice) makes it a good choice as well.

like you pointed out as possible, i have it loaded with windows as well, but i find i really only use windows to run blackjack simulations since there are no good mac equivalents. i can then pop back into the mac OS once i have the output.

so, if you wont be doing any sims on the road, i think the air is the way to go. but if you plan to sim anything (and that is part of the reason i take a travel computer), i would go for the more powerful macbook pro.

the touchpad is incredible on either of them. no external mouse required.

overall, very impressed by the way my macbook pro has handled on the last two trips compared with my old clunky windows pc.

Micro$oft stopped shipping XP 6/30/08, so once the current inventory is gone you will find only Vista .... with Vista Business, I think you can legally downgrade to XP

If you're looking for reliability I'd certainly say either dell or go for an intel Mac and put XP on it. You can still find OEM XP's on eBay etc.. for really low prices i.e £45 in UK (eBay)

As someone who does use a Mac a lot, I cant really see why if the laptop is just to be used for say internet and microsoft office why you would want anything else but a Mac. OS X in my experience has been absolutely solid with no problems at all. However, if you do want to have a laptop in which to play games and/or have more windows specific programs, a windows based computer is going to be better. New Intel macs can run windows however, if you want windows..stick with a properly based windows rig, not just something that 'can' run it.

All comes down to what you want to use it for. If there are any windows only based programs you use..I'd say go Dell. Very well established with very reasonable prices. If not, go for a Mac..give OS X a try...and if you don't like it then put XP on it.

Here's a site to check out for some comparison,http://www.barefeats.com/bootcamp.html It seems to almost favour the XP running on Intel computer for games.

How does Tor differ from earlier anonimyzers? zg
I'm not sure which earlier anonymizers you're talking about. But the Tor website has all the details, and it's probably the most widely used method out there.

If you have VPN with your work (or home), that's also a decent secure way for the paranoid types to hide their web traffic at a casino hotel.

If you really want to block out the world from what you're doing..use Ultra Surf, it makes everything invisible to anyone apart from you. Its basically a proxy system, very efficient. http://www.rajeshrana.net/2007/08/08/ultra-surf-worlds-best-proxy-surfing-technology/ Just set your proxy to 127.0.0.1 and port 9666 in your Firefox settings. I'm presuming you're already using Firefox if you care about your confidentiality ;-) I don't use it to hide what I'm doing, but I see no reason why prying eyes should be able to see what I'm doing!!!
