CRISS ANGEL the "Mindfreak" who has a show called "Mindfreak" on A&E and who will have his own magic show with Cirque de Soleil at the Luxor next year... stated on Larry King Live the other night that he is banned from playing Blackjack at most casinos. He's banned from playing poker too.

He did a pretty amazing trick with Larry... where there were four objects on the table... and he asked Larry to pick up one of the objects while he turned away and closed his eyes. He asked him some questions, and based on the way Larry spoke with his voice he was able to guess correctly which object King chose to pick up.

He did state that he has been wrong before, but most of the time is correct. To do this on Live TV was pretty gutsy too. Criss Angel stated that he as studied human behavior. And that's how he did it, and how he's so good at poker. He didn't say much about blackjack in particular, other than that he's banned from playing it.

I'm just curious, have any of you read a lot about human body language? I bet you if you did read a lot about it you could be as good as Angel. This has kind of inspired to want to learn to play poker. I think I am already good as it is at reading people's body language. Most people don't have a clue.

I'm really not sure how understanding good body langauge would apply to blackjack. If the dealer doesn't check for an Ace, there's no way. Even if he did, it's too subtle.

Here is a video I found of Criss Angel playing poker with Professional Poker Player Evelyn Ng: Criss Angel - Poker. Okay, this video doesn't prove anything. So don't put too much of your response in regards to this video. The rest of what I said should make sense. Any books you've all read on body language that have helped you win poker?

Well, I would let him play a face-up blackjack game. But I wouldn't let him sit at a poker game, unless he had a sleeveless shirt on. There are several players each year at the world series that are asked to play in short sleeved shirts.

Criss Angle - a poor version of the UK's Derren Brown. Barred from playing any game in any UK casino, he's shown far more impressive tricks with and without cards using the subconcious signals of his participants.
I'd highly recommend everybody here check out 'Tricks of the Mind' especially Series 2 where he actually shows himself playing blackjack before explaining exactly what he was doing.
But i'm sure that everybody would be impressed with pretty much any of his shows so here's a link where you can watch a few of them (Dead link: http://www.tv-links.co.uk/show.do/1/2815)
Enjoy.

i did study it about thirty or so years ago. i found it a really freaky experience. had to give it up. well not totally. i suppose it's been relegated to my unconcious process's. but anyway for me conciously using body language made me feel uncomfortable. one reason being that i just don't believe it is fully understood and can lead to 'dellusional' conclusions.

Banned

I understand why a casino might ban him from blackjack the casino can lose there own money if he is too good at blackjack but I don't understand why they would ban him from poker. In poker you just win other peoples money and the house takes a cut, like $3 a pot. In poker there are people who win money every year they play because they are exceptional players. But the casino still gets its cut from those players so they don't really care.

Hi, zengrifter et al. Haven't been playing blackjack at all actually. Which is why I never thought to come back here. I'm going to be getting back into it soon, although I'm really starting to lean towards poker. I like the idea that you can actually win online with poker. Am I right? Not like blackjack where all cards are chosen randomly. But I wonder HOW you win at poker online? Since you can't read anyone's body language...

Long time listener, first time caller.

I agree with those who can see why he may be banned from playing blackjack but I find the supposed ban from poker dubious and believe that the comment re. WSOP (players being asked to wear short-sleeves) is at best, urban legend. The only dress code I know of at the WSOP is no offensive writing on clothing and no masks.

That's a shame...the WSOP would be a lot more exciting if players could wear those Mexican wrestler masks. Oh well. :cool2:
