Cruise ship tournaments

Entered one of those $25 buy in things on a cruise a few years ago and realized I had no idea of a betting strategy for a 7-hand tournament. Going again later this year and wondering if anyone has a solid strategy for something like this. Guess I could just max out from hand one and either make it or break it.

Going max from hand one is the best strategy for these. If the prior scores are posted, and it's late in the day, you could back off once you get to a first place score. Otherwise, you're probably best served by making seven max bets, assuming you last that long.

I have been on a couple of these tournament. Won first price once $300 and got knock out in the first round in the other. The woman who never played BJ in her life won the first prize. Just go in and have a blast and enjoy yourself.

I agree. It's definitely not the place for "basic strategy". Too many people in those tournaments that have never played, or have only played a couple of times. If you stick with the sensible approach, you may have chips left at the end of your 7 hands, but unless Lady Luck is on your side - - you won't be at the next round.

Stragegy at the last table if you are lucky enough to be there is to save back some chips. My wife won the tourney on our last cruise simply by having some chips left on round 6. Everyone else went all-in and lost to a dealer lucky draw to 21. She held back and took the chance that she would at least be left with chips.

I've been on a Carnival Cruise the last two years and this is the format they use. I'm planning another Carnival Cruise in May so I'll let you know.

However, two years ago with regular blackjack it was 8 deck dealt from a shoe, but last year on a different ship, same cruise line, it was 8 deck dealt from a continuous shuffle machine. So my point is that I'm not sure if all the Carnival ships changed to continuous shuffle machines or if they simply vary from ship to ship. I'll see in May.

Hey darrislance, when you get back could you PM me about conditions? I'm afraid if you just post it I will miss it. Which ship are you going on? I'm on Elation.

Going on Carnival next week

I am going on the UBT cruise on Valor next week (my husband won us an entry). We were on Fantasy a couple of months ago and last summer on a TBJPA cruise. The "tournament" in the casino is---just go for it---seven hands, highest 7 scores make a final table, then highest on the final table wins. Enter as many times as you like. The conditions in the casino vary--some shuffle 8-decks and some CSM's. I'll let you know when I get back what I found.:p

I think the tournament conditions will be the same throughout but here were the conditions on my first two cruises.

2006-Conquest-8D shoe, S17, DAS, DA2, $5 min.
2007-Holiday-8D CSM, S17, DAS, DA2, $5 min.
2008-Conquest-???

If I remember correctly they run the tournament for several days and constantly post the leaders. So if you wait until the last day, you can see exactly how many chips you must acquire to win. Just look for it in the daily itinerary. But I will let you know the exact conditions when I return.
