It was the true count. With 1 1/4 decks left my running count was at 24. With 4 other people playing, we got rid of about a quarter deck on hand. The running count dropped to 20, but since I was now at one deck left(the cut card was at 3/4 deck), the true count also equaled 20.
Rick if this situation ever comes up again make sure you max out the LL bet and try to play it on anyone else's hand who isn't playing it. That advantage is huge, but only if you can handle doing it at your early stage in your counting career because it is an added distraction.

I think I would be to nervous to do something like that. I don't have enough experience to know what is and is not going to attract heat at the casino. I might have to ease into something like that further down the road.

yes a true count of +20 for hi/lo would be astronomical.
some where i read (can't recall where or at what true count) that at a point when the true count gets really high that the advantage actually decreases.

At a true count of +52 (the maximum possible), there would be only 10s and aces in the deck. You would get a blackjack 1/3th of the time and the rest of the time you would get a pair that you could split to either get another pair or 21. By using insurance when the dealer have an ace up you would win your bet 4/5th of the time, the rest of the time you would know for 100% that he have a 10 in the hole. There is no bad true count.

I have heard rumors of that too, but I don't believe it. There are just too ways to make money with the count that high.

I think that is true, that at a certain point the edge stops going up and levels off and drops at a certain point, then goes up again. That doesnt mean the count can get so high you have a disadvantage, your edge just decreases a little bit, but is still really high.
