Good luck!

Look for an old, slow dealer. Easier to keep the count that way. (After you get more experience you'll want faster dealers.)

I personally would suggest not trying to count cards on you first trip.

If this is your first visit to a casino, then your Basic Strategy is probably not perfect, or even near perfect. Also, your counting, at least in a casino environment, is almost certainly not spot on.
So you will make lots of errors.

Don't take this to mean that you are a failure; you are just starting!

I would personally just take a certain amount of money to gamble, say $100, and find the lowest limit table you can, like a $3 table, or a $2 or $1 table if possible. Then just flat bet.
Spend a little while, say 20 minutes at a table, and then move on to another one.
Just try to get a feel for what it is like to actually play blackjack in a casino.

If your Basic Strategy is pretty good, you should only lose a few dollars, but of course you'll probably either lose more than a few dollars or win more.

Just have fun while getting used to the game.
If you want to try to count, do it, but don't actually let this change how you bet. This is a good thing to do first up, because it lets you get an idea of actually counting at a table, but if you lose count or get distracted, it doesnt matter, you can just start again.

This is only my personal opinion, and I'll happily tell you that I'm no expert. I've only played Blackjack in a casino once (doubled my money with BS), but I've been practicing BS and card counting for months, with lots of hours built up, and I consider myself to be of well above average intelligence (IQ 130+) (and I'm very modest too;) ).
I'm going to a casino this week as well, but I don't think my counting is good enough yet, especially with the average game and poor penetration at the local casino. I will probably just play Basic Strategy and flat bet or possibly try Oscar's Grind, and try counting without betting on it, and also try to see if I can back-count or Wong-in maybe.

If you, or any other newbies want to send me a Private Message to share experiences (or our lack of them) feel free.

More experienced players, please correct anything I said that may be incorrect!

Did a little card counting

LOL, thought it was 2;1 blackjack, and some people were pumped to get out to my casino, but it turned out it was jsut a big mistake on my part. CC a little, and actually profited it from it( Won 20 bucks on one hand, my min bet was 5, increased the unit do to a favorable count, got an 11, Doubled Down, and got a jack for 21 w00t!) But I lost 15 bucks on a mixture of slots and a little roulette, remind me never to do that again. So I came out with 5 bucks and as many free drinks and matches as I could consume/carry(I didnt consume any matches).

and I consider myself to be of well above average intelligence (IQ 130+) (and I'm very modest too ).
Everytime I anyone has ever said that to me I have found it that they are either not really that smart, are intelligent but could never utilize it, or have an inferiority complex.(Not saying you belong to any of these groups, just somethign that came to mind). Good luck to all you newbs like me, hope you win some.

i found its easiest to count at a single deck game where it is just you and the dealer. they seem to deal a little deeper also. if your worried about them catching you counting, play a tip for them on your hand when you make those big bets, that way they are happy that you won and they get a bigger tip.

2/1 blackjack

Senacchrib,

I don't think most were pumped to get to your casino for 2/1 blackjack but knew you were incorrect in your assesmemt no matter your self proclaimed IQ. If you're going to put a $20 win with a DD on a $5 bet in your resume step up to a green or black table, get off the porch and run with the big dogs.

I realize you are new to the game but become educated before bragging, BS changes with the count; BS with a + 2 TC is not the same as with a + 5 TC or a minus TC.

Um, I have no idea what your talking about.

...I never proclaimed by IQ, so dunno what your thinking about.

I must say I am a little annoyed with your reply. Putting my bet on my resume? Its my first time and I just told you how I won, what does that have anyting to do with a resume or bragging? I know about indexes and stuff too, just havent studied them really, so I know BS changes.

What is the purpose of your post? Do you want to sound superior to me, cause right now you sound like a real @$$40|_3. Why should I "get off the porch" and run with you and your big dogs? BJ was never about the money for me, but for the thrill of knowing there was some way I could beat the Casino for on a game that they created for the sole purpose of making money.

CONGRATULATIONS. I vividly recall my first casino visit. I didn't come out ahead but had a blast and was pumped like you woudn't believe

So, how long did you play? Any time you come out ahead it's a victory  and if you had some fun doing it....well, for some of us, that's what it's all about!

I would reiterate though that you need to get BS down "stone solid" whether you practice counting or not.
