Hello everyone, my name is Brian and I just got into counting last week. Currently, basic strategy is second nature to me, and I'm practicing my ever more accurate Zen count. I'm using Zen for two main reasons: I will have limited table time compared to most, and I actually find it easier to keep track of than basic hi-lo (if you can believe it). Currently, I'm simulating a theoretical game at an Indian Casino (which just means $3 minimum bet) and keeping track of my winnings. I started with $150 (in theory money) and am now up to $305 after 15 decks (single deck games, which I realize isn't as realistic as it should be.) Due to keeping track of the amount I bet and what it equals (especially after a blackjack or a surrender) and the additional addition required after every hand on my sheet of paper, I am becoming used to distractions. Hopefully, I will be ready to test it out at an Indian Casino for real in a couple of months, wish me statistical probability!

Disclosing your name, and where you intend to play, is probably not the best idea. Other than that...

Welcome, fellow Minnesotan!

Heh, It's just my first name anyway, and I just heard that ML only gives heat if your messing around with 10k+. Something tells me they won't care about my measly $150 (when I finally raise that much).

Good number of Minnesotans on here, wonder why that is?

Yeah, for quite some time I marvelled at the lack of heat there. Until the night they invited me not to play blackjack anymore. But you're a loooong way from having anything to worry about right now.

Depending on your goals, I would actually say that zen is a worse choice compared to hilo when you are going to have less play time than "average" because the difference between the two are going to be so small especially relative to variance that you wont be able to tell which one is better. However, if you can keep track of zen better than hilo, than bully for you :p

Since you are claiming to be new at CC, just make sure that when you start playing for real, not to get worried about losses (too much). A standard CC (card counter) will experience a loss around 45% of the sessions that he plays (even more often depending on the length of your session). If you are playing very occasionally, it is very possible that you experience extended losing streaks lasting for even years. However, that could also be because you are a bad player. Make sure you have a solid game, be confident in your skills, and theoretically, you will be making money in no time :) :)

PS: Dont go QQing to the board if/when you lose a bunch of money during high counts, saying we didn't warn you. :)

I would still delete the location and change your name no matter what you play. Why add any unnecessary heat where there is none, not just to you but also to the casino.

Don't worry about it. With the paper and pen sim I'm running at home, I've realized that you do lose some of the bets when the count is high. One deck today I lost $105 theoretical dollars (which is two thirds of my initial bankroll) because I lost when the count was as high as +11 multiple times. I kept at it and made it back. Hopefully I'll keep my cool as well in the real world. Thanks for the warm welcome guys, I'll probably be lurking more than posting though.

sometimes i wonder

Counting is such a low return business and painful, tiring job.. Still there are people who likes to do it even with smaller bankroll..

From what I know, they will drop the hammer if you abuse the side bet or play double deck.

Good to know, I wasn't planning on playing the side bet or double deck anyway, as this is more of a hobby than anything, and I don't need to ramp up the odds in my favor to make a living (unlike some professionals of course).
