How much does it cost to change your name??

As a veteran pro player, on the road much of the time, I have my sources; but I'm very selective about who I share my discrete sources of high quality I.D. with.

If someone gets in trouble, it can be traced back to me. :flame:

Most of what is available online is poor quality; and often your money is swiped and, if you get anything at all, it is trash.

California is home to the most high class I.D. operations as they have (literally) millions of illegal aliens.

If someone is offering you I.D. on the cheap, like less than $100, it is obviously bogus. Good I.D. will cost you between $150 and $250.
If someone wants you to pay in advance and you are restricted from using a Credit Card or PayPal you are being scammed.
If the source is in Canada, you are dealing with scammers.

I know mexicans are the best source of id's, since they get plenty, but if a white guy just goes up to a group of aliens, and asks, they are going to think im a cop.

Good points, and thanks for the info, Flash. Perhaps someday I will be worthy of the source. :) I've been looking for an ID purely for comps/play myself, but it's difficult to find a reliable source. I don't see many other options, besides getting people to give me their players cards. Or playing with heavy camo under my real ID.

I don't think it's illegal to use an alias as long as you don't use it for any illegal purpose or to avoid debts. Of course it would be illegal to get any government ID without your real name. It would most likely be illegal to use an alias on a CTR .... though maybe not if you used your real SSN

That said, I doubt a casino insist on a driver's license for a players card. You could probably give them a fake private college ID or company ID and say you have nothing else.

A DBA does sound like a better idea or form an LLC get an Employeer Id Number. It ties to your own social so is legit to use for business income and no reason it can't seem like a regular name instead of "AP Blackjack of Toledo". I suppose a name like "Lucifer Prince of Darkness" may raise some eyebrows. Besides, Casino security will probably confiscate the big pitchfork. Maybe "Phil from Heck" like the guy in Dilbert that holds a big spoon instead of a pitch fork would be better. :)

i have done the taking cards out of machines to avoid heat. That was another reason i wanted a card to avoid heat.Im still not comfortable doing that often.what if the guy is a idiot and questions all the comps. He might think someone is stealing his identity.which you kind of are,but its a positive for him. the question is will he see it that way.

There is all this talk about trying to get two different ids. I had 2 id's for the las 2 years. The first year I thought i lost it went to the DMV and they sent me a new one in the mail no questions asked. I found my old one and I had two ids.

The next year I wanted my motorcycle lisence. So i went and filled out an application took the test and they sent me my permit. That permit is exactly the same as a normal id except it said class m. So you then have one normal driver id and one for the motorcycle. Simple

Even as we speak my gf has 2 on the table next to me for no reason.

answer to your question

Jeez, 3 pages of posts and no one answers the guy's question.

In CA it is very easy and costs a couple hundred bucks. You do not need a lawyer. You go to the courthouse and ask for a "name change packet". You fill out all the paperwork and I think the filing fee was $60 (It's been about 8 years since my last name change) You then have to run an ad in a newspaper announcing your name change and this is the bulk of the cost. They give you a name of a paper that specializes in legal notices. They give you a court date about 6 weeks in the future and you show up and the judge asks why you are changing your name and any answer is fine except - to get away from creditors. That is all there is to it. They give a a legal document with your new name which you can use to get a new passport. If you don't get around to changing the name on your drivers license for a while I don't think that is a big deal. Passports have no address on them so are a better form of ID.

It may be different in other states but is something that is fairly cheap and does not require a lawyer. This is a MUCH better idea than fake ID.

put a ad in the paper? can i post it on craigslist lol. I cant remember the last time i paid for anything that you used to have to. classifieds,porn,music,movies...im so spoiled.the thought of paying for a ad seems so 1990's.i sold 80% ofthe stuff in my condo in a month on CL.Its great.also, think of all the ev of signing up for the free play as a new sign up again. I have so many coupons from acg that give you free play for new sign up. just that will pay for the name change.i think im going to do it.tuscany insures 50.00 in losses for newbies.

Maybe this is some hold over from the old days, but you have to put out legal notices for all sorts of things. Maybe there is now some online version of legal notices that is cheaper. Any lawyers in the group?

By the way - there is the added expense of the new passport. I think that is close to $100 now adays.

You probably don't remember signing the form. It's a pretty simple form, but at least where I got a replacement ID, one has to check a box saying that under the penalty of perjury, you're claiming to have lost your ID, etc, etc.

Wrong.

The whole point is that it has to be public and archived in fixed format. If Craigslist is sufficiently archived, that venue might be okay, but the advantage of a newspaper is that libraries often put back issues on microfiche.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm also rather amazed at the level of ignorance by people claiming to have knowledge on this subject.

The laws for changing your name vary somewhat from state to state, but are usually quite similar. To begin with, you won't be CHANGING your name, you'll be ADDING a second name. You'll have the right to use EITHER name at any time you choose. I happen to live in Mississippi, a state with very lax name change laws, and here's how it worked for me:

I went to my lawyer's office, filled out the forms, and handed him a check for $175. The reason I gave to the judge for wanting my name changed was that I'm a musician (how could they prove I'm NOT?) and that's my stage name. Anyway; I digress. My attorney told me to wait in his office. He stepped across the street to the courthouse, and came back 15 minutes later with the court order signed by the judge, changing my name. That was it. No ads in the paper, nothing.

I then went to the DMV, showed them my papers, explained that I need an ID for BOTH names, because I sometimes get checks in my original name, and sometimes in my stage name. They let me KEEP my driver's license, and issued me a State-issued ID card in my new name. I now have two different ID's with two different names, and it's PERFECTLY legal. I've even gone in & out of the country and had immigration officers find both ID's. It raises eyebrows, but after an explanation they've always been satisfied that no law is being broken.

So, as you can see; when it's time to change your name back, you won't have to; you can just start using your birth name again.

Do not use a fake ID. Pre-9/11 this was no big deal, but now it is a big deal. Just get a legal name change, or in some states you can get a real ID by filing a DBA.

OR just play as a refusal.

As you pointed out, you didn't change your name - you added a second name, which is not unlike a DBA (if it's not identical). What you wrote simply will not work in at least California, as you will need to change your name with the Social Security Administration before they issue you a new ID.

What really boggles my mind is the fact that I am apparently the only one here who is either: (a) a married woman who changed her name, or (b) a married man who has listened to his wife complain about what it takes to change her name.

This is not some sort of arcane system that only a handful of people navigate every century or so.

GDI, here's the effing link.

http://www.courts.ca.gov/documents/nc100.pdf

In most cases, a copy of the Order to Show Cause must be published in a local newspaper of general circulation once a week for at least four consecutive weeks before the date of the hearing. The petitioner selects the newspaper from among those newspapers legally qualified to publish orders and notices. The newspaper used must file a Proof of Publication with the superior court before the hearing.

Caveat

If one applies for a legal name change they are REQUIRED to swear,
under oath, that there are no unresolved legal matters, criminal or civil.
A false statement made while deposed could have unpleasant consequences.

If the barring was from the poker room and not from the BJ pits — then you can appeal directly, in writing, to the Casino Manager - in order to regain full access to the property.

If you now look and act normally, there will be no reason for them to continue your status as a potential trespasser. Instead, they will want your business.

If you look & act similar to the way you did in years past, then there will be a chance that you'd be identified (by security/surveillance) based on photos and descriptions.

Normally a court appearance for trespassing involves a very minor fine for a 1st offense, e.g. $65

In your case, having once failed to show in court, there could be a (statewide) fugitive warrant for your arrest, (although there is probably a statute of limitations that applies here) and, in addition to a (larger) fine, you may receive a short stay in the county hoosegow. At best, an unpleasant prospect. I abhor jail house nouveau cuisine; as I eschew social intercourse with felons, even if I am but a casino miscreant.
