Howdy

Hey everybody - new to the forum, and new to BJ. Just finished memorizing the basic strategy chart, and can call it correct almost all the time. I'm down to counting 78 cards in 50 seconds, and right most the time there too. I got a ways to go yet, I know, but I am feeling like I am starting to get a handle on the basics, and am getting really amped about my first trip to the casino.

Probably going to go maybe with $100 after a few more weeks of practice, just to get a feel for what it's like.

What an interesting game this is!

I can tell you how it's going to go, you probably won't last a shoe with just $100. You'll get discouraged and either give it up or become a degenerate gambler. Keep practicing.

V Rod,

Why 78 cards ?

As a 'Rule of Thumb' we suggest a 52 card deck be counted down (face up) in < 30 seconds with 99% accuracy.

Even at minimum stakes, we suggest having thousands of dollars of discretionary funds,
especially if you haven't studied and practiced several hours daily for 6+ months.

WHERE do you anticipate playing ?

That is a very very important question that needs to be answered.

78 cards in 50 seconds is fine. If you're willing to risk $100 trying out blackjack, why not? Just flat bet and get a feel for casino play, you'll be slightly more likely to lose than to win, big deal. It's $100. Think of it like spring training. Not the same level of intensity and stakes as playing "for real" but more valuable than only doing straight up practice.

I agree. Practice at a real blackjack table, use your indices and insurance with a minimum bet and then add in a spread.

You may well be right about the not lasting a shoe part, and I know it's not the real thing - I wouldn't pretend it is. Just want to get a feel for what it's like in a casino. I have never gambled, but I am one of those guys who can remember three phone numbers at once (for a short period of time), and I came across this blackjack book and thought Jeez, I might be able to do this...

78 cards just so I have more material to have to count thru - raise the level of difficulty a little. Hard to hold more than that - I think I need to buy like a 8 deck shoe.

Yeah I know it's not the real thing, just want to see what it's like in a casino.

Gonna be playing in the casinos in central Michigan, to Detroit, to the East coast of Michigan.

Just wanted to make sure you didn't have high hopes / expectations with $100.
Good luck

That V Max is a wicked awesome bike. I actually considered it. Thing is my Dad had some bikers work for him over the years at his place and I grew up around them and their Harleys. I still keep in contact with those guys and between my teenage infatuation with the Cult Of Harley, and those guys being disappointed in me if I got anything but a HD I never had a real chance at a choice from the get go :)

Not many other bikes I even want to test ride but that V Max is one of them. Another is the MV Agusta Brutale.
