In a rut, someone motivate me please

#1
The last 2 times i went to the casino i have lost. Not big but still lost. I am wondering if it was all just beginers luck. I know it's not but still lossing sucks. I have ordered the Movie 21 to motivate me. It's the movie that got me started. Does anyone have a comment. (and not about my spelling). Thank you.

Were you expecting to win every time you played?? If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it. Learning to lose, I believe is the most difficult lesson and one that I am still learning to deal with even now in my 6th year. I recently went through my longest losing period of 300 hours before things turned around. You may want to read that threat (losing streaks) as others also told of their losing experiences and you may find them helpful.

Taken from BlackJack Attack:

Probability of Being Ahead after n Hours of Play (only 4-deck play all was avaliable the rest of the numbers were back counting)

Hours.................probability of being ahead
1..............................53%
5............................. 56%
10.............................58%
20.............................61%
50.............................67%
100...........................74%
200...........................82%
400...........................90%

Of course, your system and conditions may be different. But its a pretty rough estimate of what you can expect to be at any given time.

It's not always fun to play. I know not much in here is motivation to keep going. But I always seemed to practice more when I was losing.

I am not sure seeing the movie 21 will motivate you....see-ing as they lose once in the whole film, it is not going to be a great motivater on a losing streak.

I would advise reading the book by Mezrich that the film is based on "Bringing down the house"

The film is a very loose base on the book which is a bit of a loose base on real events, although I must say I thought the film was ok(obviously bar all the AP errors) but I did really enjoy the book.

If you like e-books pick up "You've got heat" by Barfarkal, volumes 1 & 2. Both are good reads,
and as Kewl J says look for the thread "losing streaks" ... we all have them.

motivation

I would guess getting your teeth kicked in on a regular basis is a bit dishearting to say the least. It is happened to me for no other reason other than variance. I find it difficult at times to pull myself out of these ruts but I have accepted them as part of the game. Keep telling yourself that it's just the dip in the roller coaster ride of bj. Above all take a break from the grind til you compose yourself and can play like you know you can and do. The break will clear your mind and get rid of the feeling that is in the back of your mind.

In the final analysis, it's like Pachinko

I try to remember that each hand I play is worth the per hand EV, regardless of what my actual results at the moment are. The goals then become: (1) play each hand correctly and (2) play as many hands as possible. The rest then takes care of itself. This is easier said than done, and not completely true(*), but it's a useful approximation.

-----

(*) Each of our playing lives is somewhat like pachinko. In pachinko, you drop a ball at the top and it falls down, bouncing off pins, until it comes to rest at the bottom. The expected landing spot is in the center, right below the drop point, but the actual landing spot may be off to one side or the other.

Unfortunately, we only get one drop (one life), so we hope for EV or something close, but each player's result will be different. All we can say with certainty is that the probability of doing better than EV is equal to the probability of doing worse than EV. In other words, half of all APs who play perfectly will have a result that is worse than expected. Some far worse.

So it's not you or your play. It's the nature of the game.

My godness, Billy, learning from other peoples mistakes and experiences is HUGE! If you don't want to learn from others, why did you come to this site in the first place?

Heck yeah learning that someone else got their head bashed in for the same thing your doing is great for your ego. I'm just missing my teeth and this poor bastard got his head cut for the very same thing can make anyone feel better. Losing three times ain't diddly how about three weeks or months?

You need motivation to play after three losing sessions? What's going to happen when you've lost 8 sessions in a row? Or when you're on a 30 session breakeven stretch?

You have some work to do on your psychological approach to this game if you're going to survive.

I watched a guy split and then double down at table maximum with a TC -3 this weekend (and lose both hands). That was enough to keep me from feeling bad.

Although I guess you could say that he was "supposed" to lose. :whip:

I had to look up the word, and I learned that the raccoon baculum is sometimes worn as a charm for luck or fertility.

I'm thinking about sitting out in my back yard tonight, practicing counting down cards, until a raccoon wanders by. Assuming gender correctness, I'll perform the de-baculating procedure and then it's off to the casino.

And then I'll quit my job in the morning to go pro.
