Just Finished a BJ Tourny

#1
I just finished a BJ tournament at the Happy Days Casino in Lakewood, Washington. I won the 1st round by using the strategy on this website. I came within one minimum chip of the final table. My only weakness was knowing when to turn up the heat. I found myself within striking distance on the last hand, but then realized that I could only win if the first or second place player busted. We all won and I was short. My question is, when is the best time to make a move when you have stayed close to the remaining players. And then, what is the best strategy?

Play to not get into a pissing match at the end.

Congrats on your almost-success. :)

Unless you have a runaway table, you can usually be patient and wait until five or six hands from the end before having to make a major move. See the article here about Catch-Up bets.

Also allow me to translate CP's reply above. ;) You hope to avoid a situation at the end where you must win the hand while the leaders lose. If you are at least within half a max bet of the lead, you can usually use either a large bet or a small bet to have a way to win without having to "swing" your opponents.

Last of all, we discuss this stuff endlessly over at the sister site

Yes, Ken is the real Guru on these tournament.
I play in 3 tournaments a year and I undertand just finishing third and missing the next round is the worst situation possible. It is the same as Al Gore losing by a few hundred votes and end up with nothing while Bush rule the country for the next 4 years. You are the next in line person to have missed the boat.
The only other thing to add is try not to get into this situation again.
