My first counting excursion.

#1
I just got into counting about a month ago and god dropped a blackjack table right in my lap . Literally, I was at a church festival in a nearby town and noticed they had blackjack. I figured the game was probably no good since it was at a church festival, but i wasn't completely wrong. After back counting a couple tables i figured this is how they played.
BlackJack paid 2-1 instead of 3-2
there were 2 decks, hand shuffled
and 100% penetration. They played the entire deck, and who ever got the last card, had the option of keeping it or replacing it after the shuffle.

the betting was very limited though from $1-$5

I thought wow this is an excellent opportunity to get some practice.

But then i found out the dreadful disadvantage i had. The Deal Wins any Push. unless its a blackjack.

I was reluctant to take a seat at first but then i realized that mabey the pro's would counter the cons. i mean %100 percent penetration. 2 decks hand shuffled. and a 2-1 blackjack! I sat down and played for about 3 hours til closing. Using only the $50 i had in my pocket i was able to make 40% of my bankroll in profit.

The dealers were pretty cool there they'd occasionally tell us whether or not they'd have to hit. and sometimes they just deal their cards face up. There was one hand where 5 people had 20, including the dealer. and since dealer wins all push . everyone was hitting their 20's. I actually got an ace on one of mine. Which was nice seeing how the TR was+8 at the end of the deck.

Over all though it was nice to get out and practice a little bit. I did lose the count a couple times mostly due to making conversation. I was able to remember whether it was positive or negative just not the exact number. But when 7 hands are being play you go through 2 decks pretty fast.

do you guys think this place is worth playing giving that the dealer wins the push? I'm probably gonna go back tonight regardless just because it was a good time (those Catholics love their beer and gambling) gimme some thoughts or advice.

Paying 2-1 on BJs is good, but doesn't offset the dealer wins pushs. You'll push almost 9% of the time. But playing $1 or 2 a hand is good practice, imho.

If I were in your position, I would go back just for the practice. Especially since you had a good time.

As shadroch mentioned, the dealer winning pushes is going to obliterate all your advantages, but with a $5 max bet, not too much damage is going to occur either way.

If you win a little more, fine. If you lose some back, at least it's for a good cause. (If you think the Catholic church is a good cause! )

The church games I've seen are also double only 9,10,11 and $1 min-$5 max. Both are disadvantages to a counter

Probably good for practice, but otherwise only if there are no better games ...... even then don't expect any big gains.

I dunno, the wizard says that the dealer wins pushes rule adds 8.86% to the house edge. I don't know what the edge would be from hole carding every hand, but that might tough to beat, even with 2-1 on BJ.

Then again, if you were holecarding AND spreading 1-5...

... I agree it's best viewed as a low-key way to practice. Just remember not to piss off God.

With perfect hole-card strategy, you gain around 13%. Although perfect hole-card strategy is obvious. If you use a cover hole-card strategy I think it's around 5%.

Aren't those numbers based on a push being a push, and not a loss?

if the dealers are showing you both their cards it should be a beatable game.... although $1-5 your not taking much down

I agree with you - if the dealer showed u both cards every time, I would think the game is beatable with just BS.

Although I disagree with ScottH that the strategy is obvious. Especially assuming doubling.

I dunno - hole-carding in a church - is that a sin in a church but not a casino:)

And u know the difference between praying in church and praying in a casino.

In a casino, you really mean it

I’m pretty sure they are.

Im sure scott h pulled those numbers out his a**
I believe they are from Grosjean. Thorp (and a few others) give a conservative estimate of about 9% since there are several plays that are required for cover.
