Puting your card count in a message on your phone

#1
Just started playing blackjack about a month ago.

Lets say the dealer thinks i'm texting, but instead of texting i'm putting the count in my phone notes for easy access if I forget. Would this be considered cheating if I was caught by the hotel for putting the count in my phone? Any jail time if it is cheating?

Just curios

If I interpret the laws correctly, this is using an outside, electronic devise to help beat the casino. Hence, illegal.

Use chips, fingers, or just practice keeping the count better.

I've never played at a casino that even allows you to pull out your phone at the table. It's been a pretty handy excuse to wong out so I'm not apposed to the rule.

Which casinos allow you to text at a BJ table?
I've managed to text before. Wasn't subtle about it either. I didn't play one or two hands, or even look at the cards. I wasn't counting though so I guess its different.

I went on my 18th birthday though (18+ to gamble in Aus) so they wouldn't care what I did anyway even if I was counting. Being young and looking even younger helps reduce heat, especially considering I was playing with my family.

If you're too stupid to learn how to count without using a phone to cheat, you shouldn't be playing blackjack at all.

(.. or driving, or working in food service, or especially reproducing...)

It's not hard at all. Don't waste your time or take dumb risks like this.

It sounded like he didn't know it was cheating. That's why he asked.
Well now he knows. The time to ask questions about it was before he tried it. Not only is it a stupid idea, its not even a practical one. C'mon people stop coddling the weak, let natural selection weed em out.

Regardless of whether or not this is considered cheating, I have a very hard time seeing how this would actually help you. Your running count gets updated every time a card is dealt. Are you really planning to sit there with your phone and update the count with every card? The process of physically pushing buttons on your phone to update the your message would take much longer than just committing the number to memory.

If you find yourself in a situation where there is a delay and you need to remember the count (another player is coloring up, they're doing a fill, etc.), just use chips, or better yet, commit the count to memory. When there are so many legal ways to solve the same problem, it's silly to do something which could be illegal, or would at the very least look suspicious.
