Sorry, I did not make myself clear enough.
Not the cards behind the cut card, but
the cards in front of the cut card, the cards that
will be played before the round ends.
How may cards still to be played once the cut card goes under the front section that is across the top of the 6 deck shoe.
I don't think that will have anything to do with penetration

I'll try to expand my question.
I'm at a 6 deck game, the dealer shuffles, puts in the cut card and puts the decks in the shoe. Most of the top of the shoe is open and I can see the very top of the red cut card toward the back of the shoe. As the cards are dealt out, the cut card is moved toward the front of the shoe. The very front of the shoe has a opaque plastic cover that holds the shoe together. The dealer is taking the cards to be played from that area of the shoe. When the cut card just disappears into the opaque front of the shoe, there are still cards to be played. The cut card is close to coming out, however it can no longer be seen.
How may cards will come out after the cut card can no longer be seen in the shoe? (this assumes there is a standard shoe)

Its definately variable, its best to observes the cut card placement BEFORE the cards are inserted into the shoe, this way, using the discard tray, you can predict when it will come flying out.
You also have to consider what I have dubbed "THE POOFAGE FACTOR" which is that the cards over time get slightly bent and frayed during play, and after several hours what would normally fill 6 decks of height in the discard tray "poofs up" to appear as if its more sometimes 6.5 or 7 decks, so you have to consider this when making index plays and trying to predict when the cut card will fly out and the end of the shoe.
Try to observe it next time, watch the dealer cut off 2 deck of 8 right in front of you, and then watch as the discard rack magically fills to 7 of 8 decks due to the "POOFAGE FACTOR"

Poker, anyone? :joker: I don't think it's smart to play a poor game just because it's the only game in town. Have I done it? Yes. That's why I don't think it's a smart thing to do. :grin: If it's beatable, that's another thing, but if your chances are slim and none, isn't that the definition of a ploppy? :fish:
