Showdowns with the pit bosses

I've been getting involved with some tense pit boss staring contests (I try to pretend they don't exist, but I can always feel their stare)

I don't really alter my strategy in the middle of a shoe, but If a pit boss is staring when the shoe ends on a big bet, I usually just take off.

I'm wondering if these long staring sessions are them merely monitoring to make sure noone is cheating, or do they usually know you're counting?

Do you throw out the big bets if a pit boss is just staring at you or your table?

What's the most tense pit boss stand off you've ever been involved in?

There is a couple of things that could be going on here. One you could have Paranoia which is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. Historically, this characterization was used to describe any delusional state. That could be part of your problem. My other guess is that maybe the critter was gay and he was looking to pick up a high roller like yourself. I suggest to drink more or maybe less then that would solve the paranoia. As for the second part of my analysis take a walk on the wild side and he will be your friend for life. You won't have to worry about those big bets getting stared down anymore.

Well I had the same thing happen to me recently. I was having a bad night and increased my wagers (above my normal limit) when the count was positive. Suddenly there was someone in a suit I hadn't seen before over my shoulder, breathing down my neck. I wasn't certain it was a PC at first, but then he removed all doubt by entering the pit and stood right across the table from me, staring me down with a very stern scowl on his face. He stood there staring me down the rest of the shoe. I flat betted the rest of the shoe and he left the area when the shoe was done. I colored up and left too.

I was sitting at the table and I had this hot looking chick looking at me she could have been half of my daughters age. Does this draw me into the hypothesis that she wanted to have free sex with me? I think not.

The gays do love me for some reason.

I was feeling a little persecutory paranoia after I got pulled over at night in the casino parking lot for rolling through some precariously located, side street stop sign (this sign is located like 20 feet in front of the turn on this unmarked side street/parking lot), and the cop tried to get me for every thing possible - including giving me a breathalizer and wanting to search my car. I even told him I was a veteran (it was memorial day) and that I was just driving from the hotel a block away over to the casino - that just inflamed him further apparantly. I definitely had a shitload of persecutory paranoia after that.

Whatever you do, do not look timid or afraid.

The best thing to do is to look angry, like why is this guy staring at me? It will make him uncomfortable and walk away.

You really must learn to schmooze them.
You really should be more comfortable with them by now, but its clear that you are not. zg
X2 You want to sell yourself to the PCs by your interaction with them and your body language. If you are playing rated you are selling your comp card. Use them to your advantage. Same for dealers. with a good act, you can have them eating out of the palm of your hand! Have fun! Definitely +EV!

Best of Variance to you,
Coyote

I was a little paranoid when I arrived at this place because of this overzealous cop who pulled me over for making a left turn through through a side road, intersection stop sign. I was just driving from my hotel a block away, and I made a left turn through this precarious, unlit, side road stop sign - which was 20 feet past the start-point of this unlit 3-way intersection.

He did everything but swab my DNA to see if I was guilty of any murders - I have no ****ing clue why I had such a "hardened criminal" sign on my forehead this night. My best guess is that I got that 20's male tourist - guilty of some crime or another - sign on my forehead.

This **** would make anybody paranoid.

I agree with your first thought here Dye. Looking timid and immediately running can confirm what may only be a suspicion on their part. However, I really disagree with your second peice of advice. There is nothing to be gained by this. Any kind of 'showdown with the pit' as the title of this thread implys, is a losing proposition. I would pretend not to notice, but exit as quickly, but as non-chalantly and uneventful as possible, trying to make myself and the event as non-memorable as I can. Basically, retreat and live to fight another battle.

When you get to this situation, whether they have confirmed that you are an AP or just have suspicions, their goal is to have you stop playing, whether they can get you leave on your own or have to back you off or barr you. The longer it takes to acheive this goal, the more memorable the whole event becomes. Similarly, any attempt at cover at this point, flat betting, misplaying hands is of little value. Those attempts needed to take place before suspicion was arroused. Doing so, at this point, is like closing the barn door after the animals are gone. You are rarely going to change their mind and if you do, it will be very short lived. Sometimes winning is about cutting your losses.

The point is this did happen and you weren't there to witness it. I don't know why you'd attempt to put a different spin on a specific situation you know absolutely nothing about and were not there to witness. That's simply being counter-productive, no pun intended.

To be honest I actually am unsure about "looking angry" too. However, I do remember reading it in a book.

I prefer the confused look, like hey man, why are you continually looking at me?

Nevertheless, I like the suggestion for the sheer ballsiness of it. There's something to be said for audacity in this line of work - at least, to those of us who have an appreciation for the aesthetic side of our endeavor in addition to the practical.

Call him over. Ask him if he is staring at something on your face. Then explain you try to hide a defect or illness complication and wondered if you needed to worry about it showing. Only a real Ahole would stare at you after that. If it continues start talking to the other players at the table about how insensitive the PB is acting. The eye in the sky may be watching but by then I doubt the PB would dare.
