I think I read if they catch you with $10K cash at an airport, you could have alot of explaining to do and they might even confiscate it. Some people with that much cash carry letters from their lawyer.

.........

It's to prevent money laundering.

And I'd worry about 3 guys jumping out of nowhere at you, knocking you out and stripping you in 30 seconds.
Not true. There is no law against carrying any amount of cash within the US. Carrying more that $10K in or out of the country has to be declared. However if the police find you with even a thousand dollars, they may consider that as arousing reasonable suspicion for a drug transaction, search you, harass you, and arrest you if they find or can construe anything elevated to the level of probable cause.

There's no place you can put cash that will make you totally immune to robbery, but in most situations a robber has limited time and tolerance for risk. An organized group of people who know what you have and are targeting you specifically, sure, they will be tough to beat. But the typical street thug is just interested in a little bit of money to get high with and earns less than minimum wage at his "job", so he is going to avoid difficult and risky tasks.

I read that if you are a pretty high stakes player who carries over 10k with you and you fly to places you should carry a letter from your attorney that says your a high stakes gambler that needs to carry around cash.

Also, why not just keep your money in a bank and just pull it out on the floor from an ATM? Safer than a safe and you have to walk less far...

hmm. From one bank account, no. From 4 banks, yes, $4,000, easily. (sometimes i have to do less for each $2.75 or $3.00 atm fee.) If you have 10 accounts, it's possible. If you're bank is closeby to casino, then just drive over and withdraw and go back and play.

I personally keep my money in my wallet, and if there's too much, i have a thin wallet solely for overflow kept in another pocket. In a rare time, i just throw the stack of 100's in my pelvic region, similar to automatic monkey.

Incidentally, this thread also inspired me to ask my bank what my max ATM withdrawal is per day. Only $1000 per day, but I can upgrade my "relationship level" with them to swing $2k per day.

In a real pinch, I could also use the ATM from my "real money" bank account, but I don't like to intermingle those. Going to the bank and using crotch money seems to be a better play.

Darn right! A bank has to file a CTR just like the casinos do (unless you withdraw a cashiers check, etc). A bank is much more likely to get suspicious of a large cash withdrawal than a casino. In fact, anything over $5k will generate a SAR from the bank while at most casinos it will not.

I’ve tried a few different approaches. I used to make several smaller “structured” withdrawals like Rhino mentioned. For a while I kept my bankroll in a money market accounts and just cashed a check at the casino. Other times I just keep one trip bankroll at home in case of an “AP emergency.”

I'm going with $2500 for now carried on me. I have an envelope with 20 $100 bills still in the bank envelope (fits well in my pocket) and another $500 which I just remember is in my console in my car and I need to go get. The $500 was leftover from my last trip. Tip--playing nothing but hold em at Argosy Cinci, their weak BJ games broke a long losing streak for me.

I like the idea about grouping your buy-in amounts, say 5 X $500. I also like the idea of buying in small, increasing the odds you will have to buy in again. I may go with $300 buy-ins. Remember they always call out your buy-in amount, so $500 might get some attention. I always wear a coat with a lot of pockets or cargo pants. That way I can segregate the funds ahead of time. I don't pull anything out of my wallet. I never show all my cash.

I'm hitting Tunica this week with a goal of $1000 profit, minimum. First trip as predominantly a green chipper, should be fun. Once I move up from green chip play I will look into markers, but for now I am ok with carrying that amount of cash around. If I get robbed I will just quickly cough up my wallet with maybe a couple hundred bucks in it.

If push comes to shove, I am not going to get into a knife fight over a couple of grand, they can have it if they can take the time to find it!

You didn't ask for a marker?

I had my own marker. I crossed out $20.84 and wrote in $10020.84. Still nothing happened, except that I was short another $20. $15 to pay for the cleaning of the ATM, and $5 for some whiteout so I could correct the mistakes I make whilst posting here.

Dang it, now I need a new monitor.

I can't help but think of the opening scene from Rounders, where Matt Damon's character starts pulling wads of bills out of every hidey-place in his apartment. =)

Though if I ever had a bankroll that approached a "spread it out size", I think I'd rather keep it in a high-interest savings account. Something like PC's 4% savings account. The downside is that it usually takes 24 hours to transfer money out of the account, and then as mentioned, staggered withdrawals. (Though I believe you can set a max withdrawal from your checking account to be something like $5000).

The money would be no good in a hurry. Any time I was to use it, I'd have to plan a week in advance. But really, I've never gone to a casino on less than a week's notice before. So to have $10000 gain $17 a month (4% / 12, not factoring in compounding) isn't all that bad. Much better than the old sock-drawer option, where the only thing it will compound is crotch-stench.

Ok well I understand the not pulling money out of the ATM because you can't get enough.

What I don't get is why some people here "keep it in an envelope" or "in a sock drawer".

This only makes sense to me if you are playing at least once a week, in which case pulling it out of a bank would be tiresome and not worth it.

It would make sense to me to keep it in at least a savings account or possible the stock market so you can make money even when your not doing anything.

If you think going to the bank is tiresome, try going to the laundromat, looking inside a frontloader and seeing your bankroll floating around because you left it in your pocket. It scared me to death. If I had walked away and someone else emptied out that machine because they needed it, my RoR would have been near 100%.

You've got to physically protect your bankroll at all times and a bank account is the best way to do it until you get into the world of very large stakes. Smart people like us tend to be absent-minded and it's too easy to lose it in such a ridiculous way.

i watched the discovery channel show about the MIT team. "MR. M." left a brown paper bag with $125,000 in a classroom and a janitor found it! imagine that!

my absent mindedness is countered by obsessive compulsiveness, i don't think i could lose my stake anywhere.

even with my limited bankroll i either keep the funds at home in chips (if i'm planning a few back to back trips to the same joint), or I deposit and withdraw it from a special savings account. planning ahead (even a few days) is a big part of how i play and if i'm feeling too lazy or unfocused to go to the atm a few days before a session then i shouldn't be playing at all.

i too like buying in small. i buy in for 20x my unit. (200 in a 10 min table). the only problem is when the count jumps, i'm betting almost all the money in front of me and it just seems really crazy. one second this guy is betting normally, 10 bucks with 200 in front of him. next hes betting 100 with only 100 left. buying in for more might be a good idea because it allows you to justify a big bet. but i still buy in small for the effect it gets when i get beat down and have to start pulling out more bills.
