Which system to learn + Introduction

#1
Hello all,

As a new member I thought I would introduce myself a little before posting my question, and as I didn't see an introductions forum I thought I'd do it here.

As my name suggests, I am from Australia. I have been interested in card counting and other advantage play for quite a number of years, although it has been largely theoretical. By the time I had enough bankroll to play blackjack properly I was playing poker full time anyway, so never really got into blackjack in a casino environment. I am currently a dealer in a casino and have renewed interest in card counting and advantage play, and have been reading these wonderful forums for the past few weeks (took me a while to get through the archives!). Although Australia might be different from the US in terms of conditions etc, I would be more than happy if I can help by answering any questions people have about the 'other side'. I have decided to restart my blackjack study while I build a bankroll, and my job actually gives me a great opportunity to practice counting in a live environment with other distractions (such as having to deal the game) while I am building my bankroll and studying.

Now, for my question...

In the past when I was interested, I got into the Hi-Lo count, which I got pretty good at. This was a number of years ago and since I am restarting I thought I would find out if I should change this to something else, like Zen, before I start putting serious hours in. I will be playing 8D games only to start with, and Pontoon also, so I am looking for something that can be adapted to that (I believe Katarina Walker suggests a modified Hi-Lo?, ordering that book soon). I think that maybe because Hi-Lo is much more well known playing a different strategy may give a slight bit more cover. What do you guys think, and what would you recommend?

Thankyou all in advance and thankyou all for all the information on these forums, they are truly amazing!

Welcome aboard DUW,

This is a popular urban legend the casino will detect a card counter if he/she was using a popular count such as Hi-Lo or KO, in reality it deosn't matter what system you use as long it is a good system for the game you are playing . In your case, for a 8D game Hi-Lo work very well. But i hate to break it to you that an 8D game is not very "countable" unless you have some good penetration >85%.

Thanks for your replies.

iC&T, I know 8D is far from ideal, but I think its still plausible, and I could see it as a training ground for other stuff in the future in any case. Penetration depends on the dealer where I work, and I am not sure if I could generalize this across Australia, but many dealers cut deeper than they are trained to, especially newer ones who tend to like shuffling less than the more experienced dealers. The pen is often as good as 7 of 8 decks.

shadroch, indeed I think you are a right, which is why I made pontoon a consideration in which system to choose. The house edge is lower and I think there would be less suspicion about counters.

One thing that I will mention is that where I work, heat for counters is virtually non-existent. They are used to huge bet variations from the regular punters, and I have dealt a number of times to people I am fairly sure were counting (although not 100% since I wasn't counting also, but all of the indicators were there) including a couple of small 'teams' of overseas players and I have yet to see anyone notice it.

I know 8D games are far from ideal, but they are what I have to deal with to start with, so I am left with little choice :)

One Down Under Wonder to Another....

Lets face it, conditions here are crap. Once you eliminate the Dealer wins all strategies in Adelaide and Canberra - only play OBBO rules (original bets only) you are pretty much left to dredge Crown or Star City although last time I was as Jupiters and Brisbane the werent too bad. Way back in Nirvana when Crown offered O/U-13 and allowed soft doubling it was ok. When I asked the pit boss why soft doubling was removed the answer was 'In Sydney
they only double 9,10 and 11 and we didn't want to confuse the players:cool2:'

Now I just wander down to crown every so often and Wong Brh-1 to buggery

Another question though - are there any 'Double Exposure BJ games around Brh-II chews it up without a side count.

Happy Hunting,
Brett.
