Young and want to start counting

#1
Im currently 19 on a year out before i go study Politics at university (my place is guaranteed)

I have around quite a bit of money i could use to play BJ with whilst counting cards. Ive been to my local casinos and looked at the blackjack tables and it seems like most of them penetrate the shoe at around 50%. Will this severly effect anychance of me gaining an advantage?

I'm guessing you're British because you wouldn't be able to play here in the states. If you're playing at a shoe game, 50% penetration means that the game will likely be unbeatable using straight card counting.

Yes. And what exactly do you mean by "quite a bit of money"?

50% is not adequate for most 6-8D counting. zg

I'm guessing he's British because he says "whilst," but ditto, 50% is unplayable in any kind of game.

Being 19 and in school, dont do anything crazy or foolish. If you choose to play, play for small stakes and keep your cool. This a brutal game at times and has no mercy.

If you want to get started, you'll want to spend dozens of hours practicing at home before you ever bet a nickel in a casino.

Read several books, understand how to bet properly, and practice until you never make errors at home.

I second moo's recommendation. I practice incessantly. I really feel at times as if I'm beating a dead horse. However, I still feel less than confident about my "game" while in the casino. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I did not practice as I do.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Really, UNLESS you practice until it feels like you're beating a dead horse, you're not doing it right. It's hard as **** to play for 8 hours a day and not make mistakes unless you've practiced a lot at home.

Thanks for the tips all. Ive surveyed my local casinos and most of them put have a 50% penetration. Looks like it would be pointless playing if i want to earn a profit. I still think ill learn how to do it though as a hobby and maybe ill find a place i can try it out.

Sorry to hear about the games near you. 50% pen. is absolutely terrible (unless it's a pitch game with great rules and you can play heads-up. It would at least be playable then). I turn my nose up to games offering much better pen. than this, even when the number of decks are tolerable and the rules are liberal. Are you from the US?

Do your self a favor & forget about any gambling until you have finished your education . Some of these guys keep ten thousand in their hip pocket. You just don't have enough money to invest in BJ right now. I gamble just for the fun ,using CC I never win or lose a lot ,but then again I bet a lot different then a most of these guys here. That is another subject.

Yea im from the UK.

I know education is my priority. Ive got a certain place at university next year and do well in exams. I was just looking for something to entertain me and something to do when in for some spare time. Im definitely going to try and learn to count, seems like it would be something interesting to know

You could learn to play low-limit poker. Much less capital required.

You COULD back-count the games for 10-20 pound bets, but your profit won't be that good.

But right now, you probably don't have enough cash to sit down at a table and play. You'd have to skim the good counts, and sit out the bad. Which is probably difficult to do, as I imagine the casinos are spread out.
