backcounting is where you are usually not seated at the table but counting the cards as the game progress's. then you jump into the game when the count is favorable. you could just be sitting at the table also and not playing, counting and then commencing play when the count is favorable. another variation could be a team play where one player is at the table counting and minimun betting. when the count gets good the seated player signals another the count and that other player comes in betting optimaly for what ever the true count is.
