what counting system do YOU use?

I've been a long time lurker and just recently saw fit to register. I'd like to know what systems you all prefer. As a noobie in this field, i'm still in the position of not being 'set in my ways' and want to know if the direction that I am going is consistent with what other, more experienced people do.
