It seems the recent bump has resulted in another yes vote. I figured there were still a few who had yet to step out of the woodwork.
Well I'd say that you could define gambling as anything where the results aren't predetermined and there's a large element of chance but then we'll have people politely informing me that nothing in life is pre-determined so nevermind.

Interesting. quite a few Pros did not vote for one reason or another. Maybe they only post here from time to time? Exhibit CAA, however, is usually lurking around. Quite a few book authors post here. I'm not sure if they're all pros, but they are at least well regarded.

Think about it. AP is all about gain. What is the gain in a pro posting that he is a pro on a public forum?
What is the gain in posting any advice at ALL on a public forum, whereby encouraging even MORE competition in an already overcompetitive business? What is the gain in writing a book revealing top secret AP techniques? What is the gain in accepting a nomination into the "Blackjack Hall of Fame", thereby destroying what is probably the most important attribute of an AP; Anonymity?

And maybe still other pros answered, "No." What do Evangelicals say, "The devil's greatest feat is convincing others he doesn't exist?" (not to equate APs with the devil, but you get the idea.)

Q #1--Very few of those who aspire, will actually become APs of any stature; the rest will actually assure the casinos they have nothing to fear. It will not add competition in real terms.

Q #3--Most if not all are already well known. I'm sure the question of whether or not to accept such a nomination is carefully considered.

imho competition is just part of the stuff that makes the world go around.
also there might have been more pro's voting pro it the question was pro AP rather than pro bj, thing is some of the pro AP's use pro bj stuff.
The cat's out of the bag - the casinos have something to fear and they know it. But what do we GAIN by giving free advice?
With VERY few exceptions, the blackjack world isn't big enough to sell enough books to make more money than had the author simply played the game himself instead of burning his moves out by revealing them.
The selection process is actually considered to be a joke by many insiders in the AP world, including at least ONE of the members themselves. Imagine if the founders of the Baseball Hall of Fame had decided to include themselves; what would you think of that?
And BTW; I'm not trying to make a judgment one way or another; I'm just asking a few philosophical questions. The game of blackjack has been VERY good to me over the years, and I feel that it's time to give a little something back. I will continue to post here, and hopefully I will once in a while say something that makes sense to somebody.

My thoughts on posting on public board: I received and continue to receive, a good deal of my blackjack education from this and several other sites that I visit regularly. Certainly not all of it, because I have a pretty extensive library of books as well, but a I have learned a tremendous amount both from reading through the posts as well as the members that I have corresponded with through private messages and emails that have taken the time to answer questions and sometimes extensively explain things to me. For that I am greatful and in that spirit, I try to share some of my experiences and hope that in some small way it may help someone else. Is this counter-productive? It could be. Perhaps it has been at times. But it is just something I personally have a desire to do. I know some of you guys are a little older than me and as such the internet probably didn't play as big a role in your blackjack education, so you may not feel the same way towards contributing. To each his own.
Now my second though is that the message boards provide an outlet for some of us. I know some of you are involved with team play and as such have other people that you talk blackjack with and have such an outlet. Others have developed personal friendships with other players and site members, so you have such an outlet as well. But some of us that are solo players don't have that outlet. The people that we are closest to in life, friends and/or family, probably have zero knowledge and could care less about variance, expected value and such, so this site and posting on it provides an outlet that we otherwise wouldn't have in our personal lives.
It's interesting how some of us feel a camaraderie towards other APs, and some others have a disgust for them.
Just yesterday, I met up with an AP from Green Chip who lives in a nearby state, who had never played in my area. We had never met before, but like Kevin Bacon, had some common, though distant, acquaintances. We teamed up for some 3CP and BJ. I gave him the lowdown on the local games, treated him to lunch (well, it was comped), etc. In a few months, I'll be heading to his area and he will do the same for me. For me, that's part of the enjoyment of AP.

I hope by my answers you at least realize that there are more than one reason and consequence for the questions you posed. I'm sure the writers of Blackjack books hoped for greater audiences than maybe they actually attracted. And just maybe, Grosjean has figured how to maximize book revenues; the verdict is out. If for some reason, the game of blackjack were to take off in the public imagination, perhaps aided by the influx of new casinos in populous areas--such as, DEL, PA, WV--then maybe those authors will see that hoped for bonanza for their efforts. Just some thoughts.

I agree and I would say that I've benefited from posting here by meeting with other members and gaining invaluable experiences.
Regarding just posting, I try to help others who know less than me, and yet appreciate help from those who know more than me. The entire system at work ensures the continuation of advantage play, and the flux of information sharing is conducive to new developments.
If there are some people who already know all that they will ever know, then perhaps their sharing of information is just based on altruism :grin:
