That's actually the point that I and health professionals are making; they make you feel safer, but don't actually add additional protection but make you (perhaps not you, but most everyone else) less likely to wash your hands as regularly. Don't take my word for it though...

To add to that, while gloves over little additional protection, they do give the wearer a sense of additional protection which then makes them less likely to practice the things that do make a big difference, like regularly washing hands, as rigorously as they do without gloves.
