Back Counting

I was at MGM Springfield this week, and politely stood behind several tables and counted. I wanted to test myself, practice, and see how it went. I was careful to make eye contact with the dealer and be friendly, but not obtrusive. I didn't ask questions or say anything. Still, one surly gambling addict to my left seemed generally displeased. I wonder if you guys have run into any issues back counting tables. Has anyone asked you to either sit down or go away? I just acted like I was curious and interested in BJ, but not yet ready to play. I was counting.

Unless the player is betting purple and have every single casino employee on his side, nobody will bother you for watching a game for a reasonable length of time, say a shoe or two. As for the "displeased gambling addict", you better think "F... him!" because he will be way more displease when you decide to enter his game mid shoe. You have to do it when you have to and do not bother about anything they will say. You are the one playing at an advantage!

Pretend as if the player doesn’t exist. If you don’t acknowledge their existence then they’re less likely to become increasingly aggravated. Don’t make eye contact. When they look back at you don’t look back at them. I do a lot of people watching and simply refusing to acknowledge them goes a long way in my experience.

Because Im a new player and my bankroll is a bit smaller, I rely heavily on back counting/wonging so Im not paying as much "rent" at the table. My favourite cover when at a new casino is asking for a strategy card. Then I just stand around the table glancing at the card in my hand until the shoe resets and if anyone asks if im ready to play I say "no thanks still learning" and look at my card more.

Then when the dealer has shuffled and its time to count I move a bit closer, and once the count is good I sit down to jump in. Having the strategy card still sitting next to me now on the table, when ever I feel like wonging out of some hands I just say "sitting this one out, Im gonna learn more" and continue looking dumb at my strategy card as I proceed to count and then jump back in again.

As The G Man said.. You can just say F*** em.. But I like to have something to fill the gaps of questions up in the security room or for the boss lookin in the pit.
