When I buy in after winning at a different table on the same day does it make a difference to the pit if I color down to play? Or is it better to buy in with cash? Or does it not matter...

I think that for comp purposes,its better to cash in with money.
That said,I must add this-
A potential problem might arise in some of the smaller casinos if you color up say two black and then try to cash in four black.It happened to me in The Pioneer in Laughlin,when I colored up a few times,but only cashed out once.Tried cashing four black and the cashier called the pit which indicated I'd colored up only one.Wasn't a big hassle,but I prefer flying completely below the radar.

You're definitely tracked more if you buy in with chips at some places. I played somewhere where "purple coming in" generated much more scrutiny than "change $500". Don't know if it holds for lower levels or all casinos.
All other things being equal, Joe Average buys in with cash. And you want to be Joe Average.

I usually just go in with the chips I came with. Too much of a buyin of cash at tables may trigger a multiple transaction log ($3k) and/or CTR report ($10k).
If I'm not trying to get attention, I'll use as few of the smallest denomination chips as possible. If I AM trying to get attention (comp hustling) then I'll usually go ahead and try to break down high value chips, to ensure that the pit critter records my "buyin" at the new table, so I can continue ratholing and increasing my apparent losses.
I'd generalize shad's point, if you are using "high-value" chips for the joint you're in, make sure that you, the pit boss, and the cashier are all in perfect agreement on the amount you have.

if wonging in and out frequently, i use chips (and dont allow color ups if at all possible) instead of cash. i do this because i keep the speed of the game up (ie more hands per hour) by not making the dealer stop dealing to change cash and have the pit approve. also, the pit never knows exactly how much i sit down with and walk away with. main point: speed - i wong in, put some chips in the circle for a few hands, then i'm off that table. just like that.
if playing all or playing for comps, i will buy in with cash as others have stated.

For comps purposes, does it really matter if you buy in with cash or chips? It was my understanding that comps were based on average bet size and how long you play. Not what you buy in for.
