CVIndex: 33 v 8, Risk Aversion Index and BS Implications

Hi,

As I've mentioned before, I'm essentially a ploppy. I thought I knew BS well. The more I learn about it, the less it seems "basic". Of course, there are variations for all rules and decks, composition dependent plays, etc. I decided to focus on DD, h17, ds, using this bs engine from blackjackinfo.com.

33 v 8 is a hit.

I use CVIndex to generate indices for the game I am going to play. One particular risk averse index surprised me: 33 v 8, split if TC >= -5 (Zen count; I receive similar Hi Lo results). Is the basic strategy for a risk averse player to split 33 v 8?

Any insight on how risk averse play differs from other strategies would be greatly appreciated.

I use T.C. =-5 for 3,3 vs. 8.

It is non-intuitive but worth splitting the 3's against 8 because of the potential doubled hands.

This split is a defensive move - to reduce your downside.

The Risk Aversion aspect centers on how dreadful a hand of hard 6
is when facing a dealer high card versus the pleasant possibilities of successful doubles

Note: Hi-Lo indices for stiff hands like these are weak because the count does not monitor 7's -
which along with 8's and 9's are crucial "KEY CARS" for split deuces and treys against dealer high cards.

A KEY CARD is a card whose surplus or deficit HELPS you and HURTS the dealer or vice versa.
e.g. If you have 13 and you are facing a dealer 8 a surplus of 8's favor your 2 hands of hard 3
and increase the probability of your dealer having a pair of 8's for her weakest hand - 16.

Think about it.

I don't quite think I agree with this. Putting more money on the table can only increase your risk since you can lose and win more. Are you saying if the count is BELOW -5 you split those or are you saying if the count is ABOVE -5 you split them? (I'm assuming we are talking about 6D here)

EDIT: I re-read the post and we are talking about DD. Although this wouldn't change anything because BS is still a hit.
