How Should I Track My Play?

#1
It seems that most serious players track their play and I'd like to start. What's the best technique? How do you track land-based play? How detailed should I make my records? Is there specific software available?

I'm coming at this completely fresh so any tips/techniques would be appreciated.

Edit: I use the word "should" above very loosely. I began making an Excel WS and realized I didn't even know what exactly I was trying to track. I'm hoping to have some data that could show how my personal game is improved when I begin counting (hopefully in the next couple of weeks). If anyone has opinions or maybe an Excel worksheet you wouldn't mind sharing, please do so.

if you're just starting to count, it might be better at first to concentrate on that. it will be hard enough to keep track of the true count with out having to worry about your over all play. however, if you feel ambitious, which i fully endorse, the things that you could easily add to your tracking is how much money you started with before each session, you ended with after each session, hours you played at each session, where you played. as you get better at counting and it becomes almost second nature, you'll find that you mind will want to occupy itself with things like highs and lows of each session, general moods during each session, what's the name of the dealer and pitboss, how many comps can i get and on and on and on.

remember, don't play bj for the homerun, play for the season.

I keep records by writing down a few key items once I leave the table. (Taking notes at the table doesn't look like a gambler, so don't do it.)

I record my net win/loss, time played, number of decks and estimate of penetration, my low and high bets, and anything I deem important about the session, like if I know what they recorded my average bet as, or what they recorded as my net win which may differ ;)

Eventually, most of that information ends up in a spreadsheet.

Actually, Casino Verite comes with Journal software that lets you store, analyze and chart this kind of information. I've never used that part though.
