MGM Springfield... Question. ; )

Hey guys. Thank you again for letting me in to this very helpful forum. I have taken up BJ, as I assume many of you once did, and trained quite hard for the past 5 weeks or so. I also practice often, in some cases all weekend, with my girlfriend and partner. We plan to often go to casinos together. I know I have a lot more training to do, and by no means consider myself 'ready'. Still, the time is going to come when I should get in the game, find a low stakes table and get some experience. Go ahead and laugh, but I've actually never been in a casino. ; )

So, quick question, I live about 40 min from the MGM Springfield casino. I'm also only about 1.5 hours from Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun, but close enough to MGM that it could be my 'home casino' if it's any good. I've read mixed reviews. I wondered, what are your thoughts on myself going in there with a modest bankroll, or just showing up some night watch and get the feel of it all?

Probably not worth burning out your face someplace you're considering actually playing. From reading another thread on here, Foxwoods will back you off quick, and Mohegan conditions were not great when I was there last year, so I think if you're just trying to get a feel for what a casino is like might be worth the trip down to CT (since those shops aren't valuable to you anyways). TBH, I've read a lot of negative news stories about MGM Springfield so I haven't been, but I'm not sure anyplace that regularly sees stabbings is someplace I want to carry thousands in cash.

If you've never been to a casino it's worth spending some time there to be sure you want to continue training to be a card counter. You need to be very comfortable there and aware of how everything works if you have a prayer of being a profitable player. Go ahead and visit, examine the games/rules/pen/limit, play a few hands (minimum bets only, basic strategy), and see how it feels. Just be another punter and you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah, Springfield is a really toxic city. They knew they had some of the worst crime and social issues, corrupt moron police, addiction and social ills in Massachusetts when they accepted the MGM, despite that scores of studies show that casinos are black holes in a community: they increase debt, depression, and encourage crime. They enrich corporations at the expense of the already marginalized, with algorithms calculated to keep people engaged in gambling despite no value to them. Springfield sold what was left of its integrity and soul when they did this. Sad. One thing I will say though, they have quite a beautiful symphony. They are only part timers, but damn good, and the hall is excellent also. A guy named Kevin Rhodes directed when I was there, he was excellent.

A 48 year old man was shot and killed by Massachusetts State troopers early this morning outside of MGM Springfield. There are few details at this time other than he brandished a firearm in the casino then ran outside and fired at police.
