Non-BJ Comps on the Strip

My next trip to Vegas is coming up in a few weeks and I want to plant the seeds for some comps while I’m there. Using my style of play it is best to play unrated so I don’t think I’ll be using BJ to get comps. I suppose I could find a decent casino and do some comp counting tricks for a few hours but that takes away valuable time from my playing/scouting schedule. I really like Shadroch’s famous “Put $100 through a slot machine and wait for the mailers” technique. It’s quick, easy, relatively cheap and probably quite effective. Would that work better at a HET or MGM property? I don’t know how to play VP and I heard that comps for that are fairly low anyway. Any other tips?

If you have never had a Harrahs card, they will reimburse you up to $100 in losses for slot play your first day. It is in the form of a cash voucher they mail to you.
Arizona Charlies has a similar promo, only you get same day free slot play up to $100.
In September, The Veniatian had a very strong new members promo- I honestly don't remember the details but it was great.I believe it's ongoing.
As far as MGM vs Harrahs goes, I'm much more in tune with Harrahs system. Hopefully someone else can speak up for MGM.

Thanks for the great tip. I think I'll try that at Bally's or Bill's. Is it better to give them lots of action on a low-denomination slot or less action on a more expensive machine?

Don't try to whore mail comps at Harrah's. Their system is hard to beat. It's based on your play in one day, so your best bet is to sit down at a nickel video poker game and play till your eyes bleed (which is what I did when I found a +EV machine).

Honestly, if you just buy in for a lot of money, even if you only play hour sessions, you'll get some mail offers for $20-free rooms. If you could only back-count, I would understand, but play some double deck.

Flash, please elaborate. Do you mean that the MGM properties offer comps at lower/shorter play levels, or are the rewards they offer "better" in some other sense?

H.E.T. offers very poor comps on a per hour of play basis.

On another site, two players decided to keep careful record of their BJ
play at Harrah's, Las Vegas, for a week and then check on how many points they had earned.
It was pathetic.

NOTE: As of this year, 2009, Harrah's has eliminated almost all of the goodies, like free roll tournaments for Diamond Card holders such as myself.

Note: My wife played a few hours of V.P. (all 25 cent machines) at an M.G.M. property - and 6 months later we took advantage of 3 free nights in a suhweet suite, and $150 in matchplay.

You are mixing apples and oranges. Your host can comp you based on your ADT( average daily theoretical), but Harrahs marketing department sends out rooms to just about everyone Gold and up.

Unless you are comparing your wifes VP play from Harrahs to MGM, whats the point? Your wife got X+Y from MGM for doing Z. What did she get from Harrahs for doing Z there? Thats a comparison.

You remind me of the story of the guy on the plane bragging about all the comps he gets from Casino A for his low roller BJ play. He brags about how they treat him like gold and all he does is bet $10-15 a hand. Something sounds fishy so the author prods a little. Turns out that while Mr Big is burning up the BJ tables, Mrs Big is killing time playing $1 slots, while using her husbands card.

I am a gold player at Harrahs, and I have gotten offers for free 2 night stays, buffet coupons, and free shows at several properties (Reno, Tahoe), and I bet about $10-$25 a hand, and maybe once a month.

However that was 2008, so i can't speak for this calender year

However, if you're looking to play a table game for a few hours, and then have a decent chance of an enjoyable comp, you're probably going to get more out of the MGM system. Because with HET you're only going to get like 4 points.

If you're in it solely for the comps, regardless of the costs, then hammer away at the machines. It's generally going to be a -EV game with either of the casinos' vegas properties, because the video poker offerings don't seem too hot.

You are talking table games, I'm talking slots or video poker. Harrahs sux for table players- gamewise and compwise. Thats not an issue.

Thats why you need to go to step 2 on the comp whore list- the multiple points calender. Hit them on a 6X points day and they look a lot more attractive.

Best is to call in advance.
Asking for "Player Development" or simply "a host" will suffice.
None too complicated.
Unless, of course, your level of play is too low to warrant the attentions of a host.
If you bet red for 2 hrs. a day you may not get too far.
If you bet light green for 4 hrs. a day, that will suffice
for a place on the level of "Terribles".

Well, you need to work on your comp hustling. Buy in for more money on blackjack, and put a bigger bet out when getting rated.

Slots can't be beaten, although if you want to play them thats your business. Video poker in Vegas can be beaten, but only with a strategy card and only playing the right game.

The amount of your buy-in does not affect your rating.

That is a common misunderstanding.

It is not a good idea to buy-in for a large amount and draw attention to yourself.

Of course, if you are a basic strategy player, the amount of your buy-in is a moot point.

You really do not have to bet a lot, just put in a lot of hours.

Many people prefer not to stay on the strip for a myrid of reasons.
My own experiance with Terribles is they don't send out an awful lot of offerings. I get perhaps two or three offers a year, and they are pretty restrictive. Can't use them the week before or after most trade shows, the PBR or any special event. I currently have an offer for buy one night at $39, get two free, but I couldn't use it the second week in Feb. because The World of Concrete trade show was during that period. Last time I tried, it was no good because UNLV had a home football game.

I realize that Terribles is a cheap place to stay to begin with, but it's off the strip and we like being on the east side of town.
The rooms are at least clean, and the pool ,hot tub ,and fitness center are not crowded which is nice..
The fitness center has 5 gal. of bottled water and a free computer, the kwiky mart has cheap booze and soda, and the in-house comps are cool.
The dealers were so-so..I only play BS so there wasn't any attention to me..
Maybe it's a matter of 5 or 6 months before they start sending out the better offers, I get offers from the AC Hilton and I haven't been there in a year..
