Using a Cashier's Check for Travel

I am getting ready to Travel to Las Vegas with a small team and have been thinking about how to best move the money needed for our BR.

I was at my bank the other day and I was asking how much time they needed in advance to prepare a withdrawal (50k +) and they said at least a few days.

However, the teller recommended that she just write me a Cashier's Check right away and it was easily cashable at any bank.

I am thinking this is a good option - especially for going through airport security. Thoughts?

That sounds like a pretty good idea, because a major las vegas bank should have no problem cashing a 50K cheque. The only problem with this is that you might lose 1 night of playing, depending on when you arrive in vegas. Im sure your gonna be there for a little while though so that shouldn't be a major setback. Also, depending how many people you have that are flying with you, you could break the money up quite a bit. Any domestic flight with less than 10K shouldn't be a big deal at all. In my experiences they are totally unconcerned with cash, and let the guys at customs deal with it for international flights where it actually matters.

Based on my personal experience

I never carry more than 9k cash per person.
You may want to go with chips and then also no more than 9-10chips per carry on/laptop bag..
Split cash into 2-3 wallets,pockets,bags..
If you win, back with more chips.. next time travel with chips..
if you lose, no problem while coming back..

Never used traveller cheque because of extra time involved in banking but it shall work well for tracked income. It is definitely safer and recommended.

Recently on my trip to vegas/reno, I was carrying more than 10k cash as well as chips but has no trouble.
I also carry my bank and income printouts to justify the money ownership..

Thats a good point. If you can have a bank reciept showing that you recently withdrawled money from your account and the cash that you are carrying is close to the amount on the receipt, this helps a lot in proving that the money is legit, and not drug money or something.

One caveat. Just realize that a cashier's check is not cash. If you want to cash it off-hours (like now), you may have difficulty. There is a common misconception that a stop payment cannot be issued on a cashier's check, and therefore it is as good as cash. You will find many websites claiming this. Not true and casinos know this. I don't believe you can issue a stop payment on your own CC. But, a bank can certainly issue a stop on a fraudulent check. And how would the casino know without calling the bank?

If you cash it during banking hours, you should be OK.

Ok so it sounds like I shouldn't have a problem cashing it during bank hours at a bank.

Now not that I will do this, but would a casino cash a Cashier's Check?

There are lots of phony cashiers checks out there. While I don't deal with them, I am dubious that a bank will cash a check that large without you having some sort of relationship with them.
Cashier checking scams are almost as popular as the Nigerian lottery scams.
Just google it if you don't believe me.

Very simple. Open up an account in a Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo etc., any bank that has branches in LV and where you are now.

It will also allow you to dump your money when coming back home, and you can do it just as easily again next trip.

The chinatown BoA was very helpful accommodating my needs, it seemed like they are very used to dealing with large amts of $. Just my humble 2c.

There are no problems for me to cash $3000 check a night at Rio. They cash personal checks instantly at the cashier.

When I travel to Las Vegas, I always stay at Rio for free by just playing one or two hours a day there ($25 to $125 spread), then goes to the strip for big actions.

They run the check through the same machine that is used when you buy grocery in the supermarket. I often do this after midnight.
