Yes, but accuracy is by far more important than speed for a beginner. Speed will come with practice. Its important to have your two-card combos before attempting to keep a running total. This will be key later on, to become a lightning fast counter. Dont rush it, dont be in a hurry,the fun stuff will come later, pre-memorize key pairs, such as, all BJ are -3, all 20s are -4.etc is a very useful tool.
Even sit the cards down and practice all multiples of 3 and 4. Through -50 to +50. Add 3, subtract 3, add4, subtract fours. etc
Count out loud if it helps, but stop before it becomes a habit. Also remember all 14,15,16s cancel eachother out
And if you want you could do what I did and put the 2,3and 7s(+1) into a visualized colored subgroup of lets say yellows. And 4,5,6s of blues. That way you know one blue and one yellow =+3. This is just an option of course.
I actually used this technique when I learn a level 4 count.
