what else is there to learn...

#1
i went to a casino for the first time yesterday and played blackjack..i won some money even though i didn't know what i was doing (i didnt even know what doubling down was...i just got really lucky!) and i had alot of fun, so i figured i'd learn all the rules and go back again.

so today i read all the basic blackjack info on this site about doubling, splitting, etc etc and i memorized the three basic strategy charts. i've been using the blackjack game simulator on this site, and the game just seems really bland and boring to be honest. all i do is remember what was on the basic strategy chart and then act accordingly....so i'm positive i'm missing something or else there wouldn't be a whole forum for the game. there's card counting, but i read that it is kind of useless in games with a large number of decks...so what else is there?

now that i know how to play every hand according to the basic stategy charts, what else is there to learn? (websites with more info would be helpful too!)

if you know basic strategy you've got a good start. you need to keep it in mind that basic strategy plays may vary depending on the type of game rules and number of decks you are playing against. you need to learn how the various game rules and number of decks affects your advantage against the house. you need to learn basic strategy so well that it is virtually second nature to you. then you'll be ready for the next step which shall be learning to count cards.
card counting is not useless for multiple decks contrary to what you have read.
additionally if your going to attempt counting cards you need to be prepared to have at risk a substantial bankroll.

alright thanks for the response! i was planning on going again in a few days and i wanted to be as prepared as possible so i guess the only thing i need to worry about is to keep reinforcing the basic strategy into my brain until its second nature like you said (i still have to take a second or two to think about the "soft" hands and remember what the chart said).

i'm less than 20 years old and am not planning on getting to deep into gambling at the moment and i don't have that much money, so if you need a large bankroll for counting cards i'll probably just steer clear for now....

hmm....so i guess all there is for me to do to prepare is to just keep the reviewing the basic strategy charts.

No offense, but I highly doubt you have BS memorized in a day.
Go tothis site-www.blackjack-bst.com.
Do a complete cycle-285 hands- and find out for yourself.See if you get a perfect score. If not,you still have work to do,as do many of us.

No offense shadroch but bs isnt that hard, I remembered it the first time i saw it and only muddled up a couple of splits a little bit. Its pretty easy to just remember some rules, I showed my friend and he remembered it almost instantly, the only thing he forgot was hitting A7 vs 9TA. Knowing bs is one thing but playing it fast and playing it without thinking is completely different. My friend takes ages to make his move but always makes it correct, while I can do it without even thinking.

i did a cycle and i got 2 wrong...they were both careless mistakes though cause i started to try and go fast.

i definitely don't have the basic strategy memorized as in its second nature to me, i just have it memorized as in if given a couple seconds to think about it i know what to do for any hand according to the basic strategy. for example i had to think alot on the "soft" hands and kind of go through the chart in my head, so the blue time bar went pretty far...that little time test was actually kind of fun lol..i'll probably use it to get faster with my decisions.

Hey BJNC1111 good blackjack players are automatons, so if you find being like a robot very boring then blackjack might not be for you. You might want to consider playing poker as it is a lot more challenging and fun.

First of all, card counting is not useless against multiple decks. In fact, it can actually be much easier and more profitable than single-deck games. :gaga:

After you learn card counting you will want to learn the playing departures (called indices) that tell you when to change from basic strategy, optimal betting techniques, how (and where) to find good games, cover techniques, expected value (EV), standard deviations (SD), and risk of ruin (RoR).

From there you might want to learn backcounting (often called Wonging), shuffle tracking (cutoff tracking, zone tracking), ace sequencing, ace cutting, front loading, card steering, various methods of team play (BP, Gorillas, spotters, relays, EMFH, etc.), beating side bets (like over/under, lucky ladies, royal twenties, royal match, free ride, etc.), or any other Advantage Play technique that you discover.

There's definately plenty out there to keep you busy! :)

I don't claim to know much, but if you are winning, it is always fun and never boring. I have never seen a winner walk away without feeling good.

You do not have BS memorized in one day, sorry. One mistake is too much.

You will find that if you move on to advanced strategies, you will never feel like you are just drifting through the game like a robot. Your mind has to be on so many things that it is amazing. Not to mention the joy of the "battle" between you and the pit, the role playing you have to do to stay a "loser", the funny people you can meet, as well as the entertaining terrible players.

I won't say it is for everyone though, there are people who dont like ice cream too, I guess.

Sorry if I sounded too discouraging in my earlier post. I'm glad you are enjoying and learning about the game, especially at your age where you can't lose your life savings (cuz you haven't made it yet) Have a good time but be careful!
