Anyone stayed at the Rio before in Vegas? What do you think of the rooms and hotel amenities?

Very very good hotel. Hotel rooms are large suites, nice bed, decent view (depending on which side you're on).
Buffet is fantastic: it's like a city block. There's a buy-one get-one in the American Casino guide if you can't score a comp.
Blackjack, not so good. Poker, not so good either.
It's off strip, but there's a shuttle that goes to the center strip (by Caesar's) every 20 minutes or so. Absolutely one of the best values in Vegas.

Hooker central after dark. Mediocre gambling, at best. Great buffet, some fun bars, nice large rooms. Overall a nice place to stay if you have a car. The shuttle is a cattlecar that is best avoided if possible.I'm there a few days in September. The Gold Coast is a five minute walk and has better gambling, though it's nothing to write home about.

The rooms are meh. My room at Gold Coast was better (only by a bit)

Any one else have an opinion on the Rio? I'm now really seriously considering a trip to Vegas because of the Rio comp that I can get. Apparently, after some recent play, I can get comped several days in this place now.

I have stayed at the rio. I don't recommend it to my friends. The rooms are larger than most other basic rooms. They are very basic. The tables are nothing great. If you got a comp from rio you may be able to get comped at 1 of the other harrah props by just calling, and asking. There is a shuttle to the strip, but it can be a hassle on weekends. On the other hand-it's free!
I'll 2nd that if you can get comped at the Rio, you should be able to get comped at Bally's easily. Make a phone call if the online system only shows you eligible for Rio comps. Bally's is a MUCH better location. Tip $20 at checkin to get upgraded to the new tower (I think it's the North tower) ... the rooms there are very nice.

I've stayed at Rio twice. The rooms were the largest I have ever booked in Vegas. The games are lousy, but if you have a car, it is a great location. You're only a minute's drive to the Bellagio, that is, center of the strip. You are on I-15 which means easy access to all the casinos in Vegas, including downtown. It is less crowded getting in and out of compared to hotels located on the strip. But if you don't rent a car, you'd better stick to a strip hotel so you can walk to a number of casinos.
Rio rooms are nice and big, with a little living room area, although it's not actually a separate room from the bed. But the rooms are getting a little threadbare, like the property as a whole. Service was indifferent on one stay, small problems with the room were not addressed promptly. Harrah's has been neglecting the place. Consider Paris as an alternative, if you can get a comp. Rooms are much smaller, but really nicely appointed, although kind of fru-fru, just so you know. Much more heavily decorated than at the Rio. If you have to pay cash, Paris will probably cost more than Rio. Pools are good at both hotels, but the pool area at Rio is bigger. Buffets are good at both. Plenty of overpriced restaurants to choose from, wherever you go. Any specific questions?

What, does Harrah's need the cash? I know they've had their troubles over the past few years. Harrah's has bought some pretty poor properties, but I think the idea is geography, monopolizing great stretches of the strip. The Rio does not fit into this quest for strip dominance.

Apparently they do need the money. They are about to go with a 700 million dollars public stock offering.
As for the Rio. It has been for sale for a long time and different rumor have been floated at various times. I have noy heard a thing about Boyd though.
They hold the WSOP in a ballroom or convention center, generally. That's why the Rio worked so well.

On another note you may want to walk to the palms or gold coast down the street to get some decent games. The video poker at the palms is acceptable and the gold coast ( hope I got the right one) has some decent tables at the right time. There are some characters on the street so you do have to be wary at night if you don't have a car. The Palms is come and go on tables sometimes good sometimes not. Good luck

I stayed there in July. Out of the way which is annoying and after dark the place turns into a den of Hookers and gambling addicts.
Didn't go to the buffet but I heard its great. Pool is nice and the TVs appear to be from the early 80s. Overall nice rooms though.

Trying to do Vegas without a car is really limiting you options. There are not many good games on the strip, and some that are might be a heck of a walk. Nearly all the good low limit games are off the strip.
What else is there besides the Fremont area?
