6D vs. 8D

Hi, what's the difference between 6D and 8D? I would think more deck would be better because the dealers usually cut off the same number of decks off for both 6D and 8D.
 
That may be generally true but you have to play through about 3 decks before the count really has much of a chance to present a good opportunity. In a 6 deck shoe you only have to play through about 2 decks for the same opportunity. They are almost the same but 8 deck you play through more of a disadvantage and have to be better at maintaining an accurate count. That makes 6 deck better. Look at a TC frequency chart for both games. You can see the difference. It definitely favors 6 deck.

Thanks tthree for your quick response. If I can manage to wong out when the TC drops below -1, and wong back in when the TC becomes favorable then 8D would be better? I know there's an opportunity cost here if I wong out and sit there wait for the count to come back up as oppose to be able to play more shoes in the 6D game. The reason I ask this is because I will be traveling to a casino where they offer Lucky ladies side bet next week, and from reading this board, I found this side bet can be quite profitable when TC becomes high, but this casino I am going to only offer 8D games. Do you think it is better to play the regular no side bet 6D game or the 8D game with LL9 side bet with every other rules being the same?
 
8D shoes become advantageous a lot less often than 6D shoes. I wonder if anyone's done the numbers on it - Norm?
 
Check out the SCORE on games where the only variable being changed is the number of decks being dealt. The 8D game is atrocious in comparison to the 6D game.

Everyone's correct about the the difference between 6 and 8 decks from a mathematical perspective. To boot there's also some small fraction of a percent where 6 decks is better than 8 simply because of card removal effect (same reason 1D is significantly better than either 6 or 8 decks).

Having said that, in actuality often 8 decks is better...

I suggest nobody really spell out why 8 deck might be better.

One of the math whizzes here should run the numbers to verify this, but I believe the difference between 6D and 8D is about 2 decks. ;)

Seriously though 6D is much better than 8D. The fewer decks the better. Would you rather play a single deck game or have an 80 deck shoe?

Well, isn't that one deck makes it easier to evenly distribute the card instead of having all 16 large cards clustered together?
