One more incident at Taj

Heard about it this afternoon
Apparently someone lost the bet that they would get out of Atlantic City alive. Crime runs rampant there and you always have to be looking over your shoulder. I've mentioned before about what are obviously semi-organized groups that stay in touch via cellphone as they "case out" tables, casino cages, etc. with components of their group spread out accordingly, I would imagine. In one chilling instance, I was within earshot a few years ago of someone talking to someone else (via cellphone) on the other end of the line giving a description and estimation of chips, currency of someone they were observing from afar at the cashiers cage after observing them at the tables. The sad part is where I mentioned about people "up to no good loitering about" to a uniformed security guard within minutes of that and they shrugged me off, saying, "We can't do anything unless they commit some sort of transgression and can't kick anyone out for simple loitering" or words to that effect. Was this clown personally trained by Gary Loveman??? "Errrr... watch the chips in the tray and money in the cage and beyond that WHO CARES! It's not MY money yet!" (It was a Harrah's owned casino where this occurred).
Be careful out there, stay safe, be aware of your surroundings. There are people out there with bad intent.

Just something to remember when having these kinds of encounters- no matter what do not go anywhere with your assailant, and if you are forced to, your chances of survival are much greater if you never get to his intended destination.

Listen to Tarzan and AM. I know Tarzan can take care of himself and AM doesn't seem like the type to roll over easily either. They know better than to cooperate with a predator. Screw their plans up so they have to panic. Your life may depend on it. I can take care of myself but age is catching up with me. Nobody is going to come to your rescue. Like AM said crashing your car at the right spot is the best play for someone being car jacked, especially for the timid.

AC Trivia: part of the corridor between the Taj and Showboat is the only public area in the Boardwalk casinos where there are no cameras (except the terlits, of course.) Sometimes there will be a bum or two sleeping there.

There's no space on the Boardwalk itself between Taj and Showboat. They're connected to each other.

And Resorts. But the indoor path to Resorts is tricky. The Boardwark area between the Taj and Showboat Boardwalk entrances is populated with undesirables, as is the Pacific Avenue frontage, so when moving between those stores that clammy-bannistered indoor path is the best choice.

Ugly with a capital U. I like to self-park but in AC---- NEVER AGAIN. Foxwoods and Mohegan yes.
The point others make about NEVER going with a carjacker is also one to follow. Let them take the car, the money, the cell phone, etc. but you keep your ass on the outside.
Oh and thanks a lot to Corzine and the left wing "progressive" corrupt sludge in NJ who abolished the death penalty 3 years ago. Now you know why the fat man is the most popular governor in memory.

1) going to jail for the gun violation
, or2) losing your life to robbers/hijackers:flame:---as in the 2 Taj's cases (Sunil Rattu & Martin Caballero)

Taj probably has the most dangerous individuals in there. I suspect it's because it attracts the largest action of any of the Boardwalk stores. But some of those big betters are the dangerous individuals!
With the exception of the old guy who was robbed in the bathroom and the crazy who shot the PC, these incidents appear to all involve the parking decks. Maybe a good strategy would be to always park in the Caesar's-Bally's-Claridge complex. There are 4 decks total, and they're not going to know which one you are parked in or what floor unless they have somebody in the elevator with you. So make sure you get into an elevator alone, and hit the button for each floor, let them guess which one you got off on. (They'll get lots of exercise at the Claridge parking deck!

I've pondered taking a handgun to AC, and if I thought I had no other option to protect myself, I would. Chances are I would eventually find myself in trouble with the law if I did routinely carry a handgun to AC. But taking simple measures like using the valet service at the beach-side casinos, or traveling in a group, make me feel reasonably safe at this point. I do have a permit to carry a concealed weapon in many states, but not New Jersey. If things get bad enough, I will carry concealed in New Jersey, or more rationally, stop going there altogether. I can legally carry concealed in Delaware and Pennsylvania so not that much is lost by leaving AC. Also, keep in mind Grosjean's admonition not to carry a weapon into a casino, apparently for the reason that if you do find yourself being seriously challenged by the casino for AP activities, having a handgun on your person might play into their hands in depicting you as an unscrupulous cheat and criminal when they call in the legal authorities. (I hope I am not misrepresenting his reasons for advising against carrying a weapon in casinos.)

You don't want to commit a felony by carrying a weapon in NJ. Their laws are ridiculous, but it's not something you can fight. You will definitely serve time.
Carrying in violation of casino policy, as opposed to law, is a different story. If it gets to a place where you are being bodily searched in a casino, you can be sure you are going to be banned anyway so you don't have to worry about breaking their rules by having a gun.

In his 9/24/2011 trip report, BjTraveller mentioned that he carried the above aluminum bat for self protection. The bad news: cops found the bat. The good news: cops kept the bat and let him go free
