i was reading the post on 'we got one on the inside' and it made me think. if i really wanted to learn counting why not become a dealer?? granted you wouldn't be able to play at that casino, but would you still be able to play at others?? or would you get in trouble? I know that you have to get a gaming license or something like that in order to deal, but don't know if that effects if you can play. the other problem i would see is the hours - i would be only a part-time dealer (have a full time job already) and you would probably get all the s**t hours. having to get up at 4:30 am everyday would probably put a hamper on that. but what do you guys think?? become a dealer and learn to count without losing any of your money :)

There is a small minority of dealers who count, but if you are implying that becoming a dealer is a good way to learn to count, I tend to disagree. You need to learn basic strategy and counting away from the casino and then when ready bring it into the casino in my opinion. At the casino you will find that perhaps 99% of players do not know basic strategy perfectly and a much smaller percentage of that remaining 1% are decent counters. So you definately are at a huge disadvantage if you want to learn counting from your players while dealing.
Dealers do play (the vast majority of them play just like the players they deal too), but they are not allowed to play at their casino or generally at any casino owned by their corporation.

"Become a dealer and learn to count without losing any of your money". I learned (pre computer days) by reading, using flash cards, and dealing decks on a dinning room table and it only cost me the cost of the cards and books.

I guess the big question is or needs clarification. Who do you think will be teaching you how to count while you are dealing?

As the dealer said to me 20 years or so ago in a Vegas casino, "I'd throw a big bet out there also at +5", and he had the count right.

for the most part (not always certainly) the dealers are just ploppies on the other side of the table.

Yeah no kidding. The ones who look at me funny when I hit a soft 18 vs a dealer 10 or think I'm a maniac for doubling down a huge bet with 11 vs a face card.

They generally don't know BS very well, especially when it comes to soft doubles.

Best game in my opinion is at the Borgata, but the trick is to go there when it is slow. On the weekend you are going to be dealing with $25 min tables. 6 deck DAS Split 3 times No surrender no RSA. I have not drawn heat.

I also like the Borgata for its atmosphere, poker room, and fatburger in the basement :-)

The other casinos generally are 8 decks, but rules change from casino to casino.
 
I can think of few jobs more boring than being a BJ dealer,on your feet all day.Being a counter and realizing the opportunities people are passing on might invoke madness.

I would be teaching myself to count while i deal, but as a dealer I may have too much to watch then to try and count. Also as Shadroch says it would be a very boring job. I am already on my feet all day and wouldn't want to be on my feet longer. Also as shadroch says it would drive me crazy to see how people play. To know what they should do and see what they do do would probably give me a headache. If i could count while dealing i would be ready to say something if people are laying down huge bets in neg counts and vice versa. I guess my best bet is to continue to learn here at home and then head off to the casino when i feel ready to go.

People ask dealers for advice on strategy, who often get it wrong .... or as one yesterday said: "people usually hit that, but I think you should go with your gut". Probably the safest way to get tokes if it works out.

I doubt anyone would listen to advice to lower or press their bet, but if they did they'd probably be quite unhappy if they lost ...... though probably give huge tokes if they won.

But if you are counting while dealing you will not be able to test for accurately unless you are giving 100% penetration. And at that point, I would ask where you are dealing because I will then be seated at third base.
